Saint John Chrysostom

Our patron among the saints is John Chrysostom, archbishop of Constantinople, who was an inspirational preacher from the fourth and fifth centuries in Syria and Constantinople. He is famous for his denunciation of abuse of authority in the Church and in the Roman Empire of

the time, and for a Divine Liturgy. He had notable ascetic sensibilities. After his death he was named Chrysostom, which comes from the Greek Χρυσόστομος, "golden-mouthed."

He was born in Antioch of noble parents; his father was a high-ranking military officer. After his father’s death, Saint John was brought up by his mother Anthusa, who had him baptized in 370 and commissioned a lector of the local church. He began his education under a pagan teacher, but went on to studying theology while practicing extreme asceticism. He was not satisfied, however, and became a hermit and remained so until poor health forced a return

to Antioch.

He was ordained a deacon in 381 by St. Meletius of Antioch, and was ordained a priest in 386 by Bishop Flavian I of Antioch. It seems this was the happiest period of his life. Over about twelve years, he gained much popularity for the eloquence of his public speaking.

Notable are his insightful expositions of Bible passages and moral teaching. The most valuable of his works are his Homilies on various books of the Bible. He particularly emphasized almsgiving. He was also most concerned with the spiritual and temporal needs of the poor. He spoke out against abuse of wealth and personal property. In many respects, the following he amassed was no surprise. His straightforward understanding of the Scriptures meant that the themes of his talks were eminently social, explaining the

Christian's conduct in life.

San Juan Crisóstomo

San Juan Crisóstomo fue un clérigo cristiano eminente, patriarca de Constantinopla, considerado por la Iglesia católica uno de los cuatro

grandes Padres de la Iglesia del Oriente. La Iglesia ortodoxa griega lo

valora como uno de los más grandes teólogos y uno de los tres pilares de esa Iglesia, juntamente con Basilio el Grande y Gregorio Nacianceno. Este Padre de la Iglesia fue famoso por sus discursos públicos y por su denuncia de los abusos de las autoridades imperiales y de la vida licenciosa del clero bizantino. San Juan recibió el título por el que le

conoce la posteridad: Juan Crisóstomo. Ese término proviene del griego, chrysóstomos (χρυσόστομος), y significa ‘boca de oro’.

Nació en Antioquía (Siria), en el año 347. El padre de Juan, Secundo, era un alto oficial del ejército sirio y murió poco tiempo después del nacimiento de Juan por lo que su hermana

mayor y él quedaron totalmente a cargo de Antusa, la madre cristiana de ambos. San Juan fue bautizado en 370, a la edad de 23 años y fue ordenado lector. Comenzó estudios en la filosofía y luego, un encuentro con el obispo Meletio resultó decisivo en la vida

de Juan, quien comenzó a estudiar teología mientras mantenía un ascetismo extremo. No obstante, las ansias de una vida más perfecta lo llevaron a convertirse en un eremita condición en la que permaneció hasta que su quebrantada salud por excesivas vigilias y

ayunos durante el invierno lo obligaron a volver a Antioquía.

En 381 fue ordenado diácono y en 386 fue ordenado sacerdote. Al parecer fue éste el momento más feliz de su vida. Su principal tarea durante doce años consistió en predicar. Adquirió gran popularidad por su elocuencia. Dignos de mencionar son los comentarios que hizo a pasajes bíblicos y la exposición de enseñanzas morales muchas de ellas recopiladas en sus Homilías.

Durante su misión como obispo mostró gran preocupación por las necesidades espirituales y materiales de los pobres. También se pronunció en contra de los abusos de los poderosos y de la propiedad personal. Su interpretación directa de las Escrituras lo condujo a seleccionar para sus charlas temas eminentemente sociales que explicaban el concepto de la vida cristiana.
