The idea to organize a major internationaldiving event in our region accompanied

with many interesting topics and guests,occurred to me exactly a year ago. As I havebeen attending the Techmeetings since the firstyears of their existence, I know how demandingthe audience is. A year of speculating, planningand preparations flew by and now we arealmost at the final stage; at the brink of openingthe conference - International Techmeeting2012, an event, which has not yet been seenhere and probably will not be for a while. Only 6weeks left before all of us involved in technical,but also general diving, meet. We have fantasticguests attending, a fabulous programme,unique exhibits for display and an interestingexhibitors. A huge number of attendees signedup, I have an excellent team of collaborators,what more is there to wish for? Perhaps only enough patience while waiting forthe opening of this extraordinary event. I am

ow to introduce a man, who combines atop engineer, cave and technical diver all

in one. Those of us who read the cult book ”Beyond the Deep” now have the great opportu-nity to meet in person this remarkable personal-ity of worlds history in extreme explorations ofunderwater cave systems supported byadvanced equipment and one of the most his-torically significant programs of electronicallyoperated devices with a closed circuit eCCRCis-Lunar.

More than 40 years of experience with extremecave diving with more than 450 days spentunderground, often in depths under 1000m,leader of approximately 60 expeditions – histor-ically important projects Huautla, Cheve ,J2 inOaxaca, Mexico. More than 30 years of experi-ence with technical support in extremedescends – first utilization of high pressurecomposite bottles/ cylinders. Since the mid 80s,he began as one of the first ones, to use Trimixfor deep cave descends.

Bill stands behind the development of the his-torically most significant projects CCR-CisLunar from 1987 to 1999. Leader of theNational Geographic Society Wakulla Springsand Wakulla 2 in 1987 and 1999 – the 3D wallmapper was used here for the first time, adevice used to map a cave in 3D, new andpowerful DPV scooters and habitats – adecompression tent for a comfortable and dryseating of several divers during a long decom-pression. Bill performed a 24 hour longdescend with the first eCCR Cis Lunar Mk 1during the first expedition, the second expedi-tion – around 234 dives, from which 35 were ina 100m depth, with approximately 4 and a halfhours spent in this depth – were performed with

the Mk 5 version. All expeditions show theimmense efficiency of eCCR Cis Lunar.Approximately 24km of underwater corridorswere mapped.

Since year 2004, Bill is the leader of the NASADEPTHX project, creating a new autonomousROV for the exploration of cenotes aroundZacaton, with the ability to sample water, sedi-ment, fauna and flora. ROV DEPTHX mappedZacaton to a 335m depth and discovered 6new types of bacteria.

In recent years, he is the project manager ofNASA’s ENDURANCE (Environmentally Non-Disturbing Under-ice Robotic ANtarctiCExplorer) – exploration and 3D mapping ofWest Lake Bonney in Antarctica, and NASAVALKYRIE in creating an intelligent cryobote toextract samples. Since year 2009, he continuesto explore the J2 cave in Mexico, now with theuse of a new micro rebreather Cis Lunar Mk 6,created in collaboration with the companyPoseidon.

The holder of many technical patents, authorsof approximately 140 technical publications,more than 100 commentaries and the author of2 books – The Wakulla Springs Project (1989);the Time-Warner book Beyond the Deep(2002) ; and currently the main protagonist ofthe newly published book of James Tabor, BlindDescent (2010).

1999 Veľké Sedlo / CZFirst meeting has attended almost 80divers, whose formed almost whole commu-nity of technical divers in our countries inthat time. We've been diving in a quarry"Svobodné Heřmanice" with strange equip-ment. Lectures were hold in pension "V.Sedlo" in very comfortable atmosphere. M.Háša analyzed preparation and procedureof mixing gasses. He was very general byoffering his program on 3,5 diskette for freedistribution to all participants. T. Sládek pre-sented his contribution about decompres-sion theory. The top of the evening waspresentation of M. Weidner referring aboutoptions of finding wrecks. That time somany participants heard from primarysource and maybe for first time about sidescan sonar, proton magnetometer, utilizationof ROV even about "P" valve.

Smile on the face invoke even fact, thatA.Vondrka, known more from internet con-ferences, that time recently returning fromUSA, demonstrated method of equipmentmodification and benefit of setup accordingto DIR system. D. Skoumal introduced edu-cational system ERD, S. Pěkník IANTD andJ. Štetina TDI. R. Korim reported about rins-ing tendency of technical diving in Slovakia. We have seen film about contemporarydepth record from location "Hranickápriepasť" (Háša, Skoumal) a D. Hutňancommented document which maps findingsin cave Skalistý potok. Evening took placein less formal atmosphere therefore nextday only real tough divers dove into SlezskáHarta. Historically the first meeting, credit shouldbe given to trio Háša - Skoumal - Pěkník,raised fundamental base to tradition ofCzech and Slovak technical diving meetingslasting until now.

2000 Orlík / CZSuccess of first unit promoted the idea ofnext meetings. Within a year and a day wehave met again because of successfulpreparation from tandem P. Votava - M.Trdla on Orlická priehrada. Even there havebeen almost hundred visitors, meeting stillhave non- grandiose - family feeling charac-ter, and therefore we were diving again. Wehave tried our dive in heavy - work - suit onnewly discovered location - church in sankvillage Těchnice. This time in contrast fromfirst year lectures have had more expertknowledge and they haven't dealt with ques-tions as "what is it Nitrox?" More of thespeakers have presented successful eventsor their construction achievements. Guysfrom section of Slovak technical diversshowed off effectual expedition to wreckSaint Istvan, during which there was usedand mixed a big amount of TMx. NorthMoravia presented their knowledge fromUSA which resulted in increasing of techni-cal instructors in our countries.
