Refuge Facts Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) lies in the floodplain between two major waterways: the mighty Mississippi and Illinois rivers. This peninsula environment provides unique and valuable habitats for both resident and migratory wildlife. The Refuge functions as an important link for migratory birds that rest, feed, and winter along the Mississippi Flyway. The Refuge headquarters and visitor center are located near Brussels, Illinois in Calhoun County.

Big Game Hunting• Apple Creek Division, Clarksville Island

Division and Calhoun Division land east ofIllinois River Road- Deer hunting is allowedin accordance with Illinois state seasons andregulations.

• Deer hunting on Clarksville Island is restrictedto archery only.

• Portable stands may be used but they mustbe removed at the end of each day’s hunt. Nonails, screws, or other hardware may be used toclimb or secure stands to the trees.

• Batchtown, Portage Island, Gilbert Lake, andthe remainder of the Calhoun Division-Closed to big game hunting.

Migratory Bird Hunting•

Apple Creek and Calhoun Division land east of Illinois River Road- Migratory bird hunting is allowed in accordance with Illinois State seasons and regulations.Only portable blinds are permitted. Hunters must remove boats, decoys, and portable blinds at the end of each day’s hunt. Hunters must possess and use only lead free shot shells while hunting all game. Batchtown, Portage Island, Gilbert Lake, Clarksville Island and the remainder of the Calhoun Division- Closed to migratory bird hunting.

Upland Game Hunting• Apple Creek Division, Clarksville Island

Division and Calhoun Division land east ofIllinois River Road- Upland game huntingis allowed in accordance with Illinois stateseasons and regulations.

• The refuge is open to public use duringdaylight hours only, and therefore is closed toall nighttime hunting of furbearers.

Upland Game Hunting continued• Hunters must possess and use only lead free

shot shells while hunting all game.• Wild turkey hunting on Clarksville Island

Division is restricted to archery only in the fall and shotgun or archery in the spring

• Batchtown, Portage Island, Gilbert Lake, Clarksville Island and the remainder of the Calhoun Division- Closed to upland game hunting. Includes small game, furbearers, turkey and game birds (except migratory birds).

Sport Fishing• Apple Creek Division- Fishing is allowed

during daylight hours only in accordance withIllinois state seasons and regulations.

• Batchtown, Calhoun, Gilbert Lake and PortageIsland Divisions- Fishing is allowed duringdaylight hours only from Jan. 1-Oct. 15, inaccordance with Illinois state seasons andregulations.

• Boats are allowed in Batchtown and SwanLake during the open period for sport fishingpurposes only.

• Boats are allowed in Gilbert Lake only whenflood waters enable access from the river overthe levee, and only for sport fishing purposesduring the period specified above. Banklaunching is not allowed in Gilbert Lake.
