YElloWStoNE SuPER-volcaNo Not about to ERuPt, dESPitE RumouRScbc.ca - Yellowstone National Park assured guests and the pub-lic on Thursday that a super-vol-cano under the park was not expected to erupt anytime soon, despite an alarmist video that claimed bison had been seen fleeing to avoid such a calamity. Yellowstone officials, who fielded dozens of calls and emails
since the video went viral this week following an earthquake in the park, said the video actual-ly shows bison galloping down a paved road that leads deeper into the park. “it was a spring-like day and they were frisky. contrary to online reports, it’s a natural oc-currence and not the end of the world,” park spokeswoman amy bartlett said. assurances by Yellowstone of-

ficials and government geolo-gists that the ancient super-vol-cano beneath the park is not due to explode for eons have appar-ently done little to quell fears among the thousands who have viewed recent video postings of the thundering herd. commentary with one of the clips by a self-described surviv-alist wearing camouflage, dark sunglasses and a black watch cap suggests the wildlife exodus may be tied to “an imminent erup-tion here at Yellowstone.”
4.8 magnitude earthquake last Sunday
The 4.8 magnitude earth-quake that struck early Sunday near the Norris Geyser basin in the northwest section of Yel-lowstone, which spans 9,000 square kilometres of Wyoming, montana and idaho, caused no injuries or damages and did not make any noticeable alterations to the landscape, geologists said. Though benign by seismic standards, it was the largest to rattle Yellowstone since a 4.8 quake in February 1980 and it occurred near an area of ground uplift tied to the upward move-ment of molten rock in the su-per-volcano, whose mouth, or caldera, is 80 km long and 50 ki-lometres wide. but neither the quake, the largest among hundreds that have struck near the geyser ba-sin in the last seven months, nor the uplift suggest an eruption sooner than tens of thousands of
years, said Peter cervelli, associ-ate director for science and tech-nology at the u.S. Geological Survey’s volcano Science center in california. “The chance of that happen-ing in our lifetimes is exceeding-ly insignificant,” said cervelli, a scientist with the Yellowstone volcano observatory. cervelli said the area of uplift that scientists have been tracking since august is rising at a rate of between 10 centimetres and 15 centimetres a year. Geologists who tracked uplift in the same area from 1996 to 2003 also saw elevated seismic activity, he said.

Play ball! From the impromptu games of “town ball” in the 1800s, through Jackie Robinson’s montreal Royals to the Expos and blue Jays, canadians have always been infatuated with baseball. but getting big league teams to come to canada proved harder than hitting a grand slam. it took decades of persuading, promoting, wheeling and dealing, but eventually america’s favourite pastime found a home in the great white north. The blue Jays’ first game leaves many wondering if putting a major league team in toronto was such a good idea. The weather is freezing cold and the entire field is covered in snow. Players and fans alike wonder if it will be a “snow-out.” but groundskeepers vacuum up the snow, and after an 18-minute delay the umpire shouts “Play ball!” in front of 44,000 delighted fans. • anne murray, dressed in a red parka, sang a rather hurried version of o canada before the first pitch.• The blue Jays won the game, outscoring the chicago White Sox 9-5. Jays first baseman doug ault became an instant hero by hitting two home runs.• in their first season, the blue Jays sold 9,000 season tickets, an amer-ican league record for a rookie club. more than 1.7 million fans attend games that first year. • The blue Jays’ record in their first year was 54 wins and 107 losses, an almost identical result as that achieved by the Expos in their inaugural season. The Jays finished last in the american league East.• The Seattle mariners were the other expansion team in 1977.• Exhibition Stadium was built for football in 1958 and modified for blue Jays baseball. it could hold 43,737 baseball fans. The stadium had several drawbacks: the only covered section was over the left-field general admission seats (ironically, the cheapest in the park); the open end of the field faced windy lake ontario and the metal seats were particularly uncomfortable in cold weather.• in 1989 the blue Jays moved to the newly-constructed Skydome.• Exhibition Stadium was demolished in 1999
Two Men were leaving church on a bright Sunday morning.
“You know,” said the first friend, “I can always tell who the golfers are
in church.”
“How’s that?” asked his friend.”It’s easy,” he said. “Just look at
who is praying with an interlocking grip.”

Family members bowed their heads as 4-year old bobby was asked to pray before dinner. Hebegan his prayer, thanking God for all his friends and family members. Then he began to thank God for the food, the turkey, the mashed potatoes, the fruit salad and even the milk. Then he paused and everyone waited. after a long silence, the little boy opened one eye, looked at his mother, and whispered “if i thank God for the broccoli, won’t he know i’m lying?”
