ContemptOF COURTWHAT

The Supreme Court has heldthat two tweets by lawyerPrashant Bhusan that he had

tweeted against the apex court, amount to the contemptof court. Bhushan, had on June 27, accused the SC ofplaying a part in the "destruction of India's democracy" inthe last six years. According to The Contempt of CourtsAct 1971, a criminal contempt means the publication(whether by words, spoken or written, or by signs, or byvisible representation, or otherwise) "scandalises" or"tends to scandalise" any court.

WHOCAN FILE FOR THE CONTEMPTOF COURT: The contempt pro-ceedings can be initiated by an

What does the Moon smell like?

H e may never have pulled on a space-suit or flown in a shuttle but that hasnot stopped Frenchman Michael

Moisseeff from reaching for the stars. Af-ter years of exploring and reconstructingthe scents of planet Earth, the 66-year-old‘aroma sculptor’ has set himself a new goal—capturing the smell of the Moon.

THE MAN WITH A MISSION In his lab, Moisseeff tries to dissect themysteries of smell by producing all kinds ofscents, fragrances and emanations fromthe molecules Since, he hasn't been tothe Moon, he read the descriptions madeby various astronauts who walked on theMoon, in particular Neil Armstrong, the firstman ever to do so in 1969Due to the lackof oxygen on the Moon, he (Armstrong)obviously couldn't smell anything, but onceback in the module, the smell of the dustclinging to his spacesuit reminded him ofthe burnt black powder of an old six-shoot-er," he says. In order to reproduce thatsmell, Moisseeff chose to detonate blackpowder in his own saucepans. After severalfailed attempts, he finally succeeded in"capturing" a burnt deposit. A blend ofmetallic, carbon and sulphur notes com-bined to titillate the nostrils and the imagi-nation. He is still working on it

THE PUNISHMENT: The Act provides for“simple imprisonment for a term, which mayextend up to six months, or with a fine thatmay extend up to `2,000, or with both”. Italso says that should a person apologise, and if the court is satisfied with the apology, even if “it is qualified or conditional”, nopunishment needs to be meted out

X-PLAINED

Our Milky Way has aDISTANT COUSIN!

Astronomers have found a galaxy far, faraway that looks like the Milky Way

The galaxy, calledSPT0418-47, is so far away

that it took billions of years forits light to reach the Earth, said

the European SouthernObservatory (ESO), which was

involved in the discovery

It's lurking 12.4 billion lightyears away

Although it lacks the characteristiccurving arms of a spiral galaxy,SPT0418-47 does consist of a flat, rotating disc. It has a similar masslike that of the Milky Way

More stunningly, it has a galacticbulge, the tightly-packed concentra-

tion of stars, found in the middle ofmost spiral galaxies.

SPT0418-47 is relatively cool andfaint. It was picked up by the pow-erful Alma radio telescope inChile, using a technique calledgravitational lensing, where anearby galaxy acts as a powerfulmagnifying glass

The BIG Q: Will SPT0418-47evolve into another Milky Way?

Astronomers don’t think so. Theyexpect it to evolve into a galaxyvery different from our Milky Way,and join the class of ellipticalgalaxies, which lack spiral arms

Our galaxy is, on an average, a hun-dred thousand light years across, butonly a thousand light years thick.Within this flattened disc, the sun andits planets are embedded in a curvingarm of gas and dust, putting the solarsystem about 26,000 light years awayfrom the galaxy’s turbulent core

It has a huge black hole. CalledSagittarius A*, the supermassive blackhole weighs more than four milliontimes the mass of the sun

The Milky Way eats galaxies thatcome too close. Over the years, scien-tists have detected some two dozenfaint streamers of stars (Source: NGC)

astronomer to determine thatthe “milky” band of light wasmade up of many individualstars?A. Nicolaus CopernicusB. Albert EinsteinC. Galileo GalileiAns: C Galileo Galilei pointedhis first rudimentary tele-scope at the Milky Way in1610.

2 How manyplanets are

there in theMilky Way?

A. Nine B. Eight

C. More than100 billionAns: C. Our galaxy is loadedwith planets, with the newones being discovered all thetime.

3 PSR B1620-26 b is believed to

be the Milky Way’s oldestplanet. What is its nickname?A. Methuselah B. LazarusC. NibiruAns: A Astronomers believeMethuselah is about 12.7 bil-lion years old, which means ithas been around, nearly aslong as the Universe. (Source: Inside the perimeter)

Making Math fun is essential to engage students in even learning the basics. Wesee the difference in achievement when students are engaged and

participating. So making learning fun is a big part of our goal!

MATH

STARRING

MAHI on taking risks:During the final of the 2011 ICCWorld Cup, when India lost earlywickets against Sri Lanka, MSDhoni himself came to bat insteadof sending Yuvraj Singh. Heplayed till the end and India wonthat edition of the World Cup. Thiswas a major decision which couldhave gone either way. In other instances, he has backed IshantSharma in the Champions Trophy2013 and Joginder Sharma inWorld T20 2007, and this has paidoff well. One of the lessons thatwe can draw out is that leadersmust be willing to take risksand try out something new instead of sticking to patterns.

What You Could Do: Try an activity called HeliumHula, which helps teams breaktheir patterns and come up withinsights to think afresh.

Mahi led the way to becom-ing world Class:

Dhoni is a believer in experientiallearning. Here’s what he said ongetting better, “I don’t studycricket too much. Whatev-er I have learned or experi-enced is through cricket, I’veplayed on the field, andwhatever little I havewatched.” The point is learningby doing is the best way to fastenthe learning process. When you dosomething, you observe and form

a model (or process) of it in yourmind. Once the model is there inyour mind, you further apply it inreal life situations and thereby learnmore and more.

What You Could Do: It is all aboutrefining yourself day in day outwith every passing experience.

On Developing Champions:Dhoni has been criticised by peo-ple for supporting players whowere out of form. When otherssaw an out-of-form player,Dhoni saw something unique

and believed in the individ-ual. It was this belief thattransformed several players, including the incoming cap-tain and arguably the bestbatsman in the world, ViratKohli. Here’s what Kohli has tosay about Dhoni – “He (Dhoni) wasalways the person who guided meinitially and gave me opportuni-ties. He gave me ample time andspace to grow as a cricketer, savedme from getting dropped from theteam many a times.”

Being cool!“Captain Cool” is the title givento him for the calmness shown byhim during tough times. When histeam wasn’t doing well in the IPLmatches (and the team’s man-agement was stuck in controver-sy of match-fixing) he maintainedhis cool and performed well. Hehas maintained his demeanouron the field and has managed hisemotions well when the team wasnot doing well. Leaders who main-tain a sense of balance in toughand successful times can thinkthrough objectively.

Three keys to writing anadventure story

1. Adventure stories are journeys from the expected to the unexpected.

2. Adventure stories contain an element of risk.

3. In adventure stories, the risk changes and oftenescalates during the story and in response to thecharacter’s actions.
