Some good luck!
True of all funding applications BUT some special cases apply for fellowship applications …………..
What makes a good application?
Similarities and differences between grants and fellowships
General comments but will need to take into account the different fellowship levels
Assessment area Similarities Differences
Applicant Track record Personal application, potential of applicant
Research Quality approach Training vehicle
Training and development Linked to proposed research, key feature
Environment Track record, evidence of support
Supervision / mentorship experience
Value for money Research, service and NHS costs
NIHR Research Design Service for the West Midlands
Common errors in fellowship applications• Errors in the pitchJust securing salary, good candidates but weak projects or wrong environment, ignorant of NIHR, coy about leadership potential• Errors in the projectToo much specialist knowledge assumed, not feasible, high risk, lack of methodological advice taken, inadequate PPI• Errors in the environmentInappropriate or research-weak, staying at same institution, lack of links with and lack of support from host institution
NIHR Research Design Service for the West Midlands
Common errors in fellowship applications• Errors in trainingPlan not thought through, unclear how it relates to project, unclear how it prepares candidate for next stage of career• Errors in preparation (for shortlisted candidates)Unrehearsed, illegible slides, lack of advice taken, unprepared to answer questions beyond the project• Methodological fellowship applications - challengesApplied focus – relevance to NIHR and demonstrate patient benefit. “How can the research tools be sharpened to allow NIHR to do its research more effectively and efficiently?”
