Recap: Recounts retell past events.

What is the difference between recounts and narratives?

Recounts can be considered a type of narrative.

A narrative is any account of events presented by a narrator to a reader / listener / viewer.

In the school context, “narratives” often refer to “stories”.

What are stories?

Stories are made-up accounts of events.

The main purpose of stories is to entertain the reader.

How To Write Good Stories

Make your main

character come alive

It’s a good idea to base the main character on yourself, because you know yourself best.

Use action verbs

Don’t use too many boring verbs like

“was” and “were”.

Boring example

Finally, when it was Jessie’s turn to sing, she sang and it was horrible.

Good example

Finally, when it was Jessie’s turn to sing, she sang and it was horrible.

Finally, when it was Jessie’s turn to sing, she opened her mouth and tried to hit the right pitch. To her great shock, nothing came out. With fingers clasped, she tried to force the air out of her throat, but all that she heard was a horrible croak.
