Word PlayHouse is a program that provides students with visual

impairments the opportunity to

participate in classroom activities that focus on phonics, spelling, and phonemic awareness.

Word PlayHouse can be used to teach students with visual impairments

some of the concepts and skills necessary for emergent, beginning,

and struggling readers to become fluent

readers.

Word PlayHouse Kit Includes:

• 435 letter tiles in large print with braille overlay and velcro backing

• Bi-fold felt work board for building words & manipulating letters and for letter storage

• Storage binder• Teacher’s Guide

Letter Tiles include:

• Vowels• Consonants• Blends• Diagraphs• Word endings• Word families• Contracted and

uncontracted braille for some blends and word families

Vowels, vowel digraphs, and vowel diphthongs are

printed on yellow tiles in black print and braille, and

have a small open circle point symbol in upper left

corner. The upper right corner has been notched to

provide orientation for braille readers. Velcoin dots attach to back of each tile to secure to bi-fold felt board

and for storage.

Consonants, consonant digraphs, and blends are

printed on blue squares in black print and braille, and have a small vertical bar

point symbol in upper left corner. Upper right corner

has been notched to provide orientation for braille reader. Velcoin dots attach to back of each tile to secure to bi-fold board and for storage.

Word families and suffixes are printed on green tiles in black print and braille, and there are no tactile point

symbols in upper left corner. The upper right corner has been notched to provide

orientation for braille readers. Velcoin dots attach to back of each tile to secure

to bi-fold board and for storage.

Contracted Braille Cards:

Because all students are not introduced to contracted braille at same time, 2

different tiles are enclosed for some word families,

suffixes, blends, diphthongs, and digraphs.

Contracted Braille Cards

•Contracted braille letter combinations printed on green tiles with black print and braille, with both top corners notched •Upper right corner notch is for orientation•Upper left corner notch alerts teacher and student that contracted braille is used on the tile

•Velcoin dots attach to back of each tile to secure letter to bi-fold board and for storage.

Use Word PlayHouse to teach beginning phonics

and reading skills, including letter

recognition, braille code recognition, decoding,

vocabulary, and spelling skills. And watch your

students have fun!
