Hello I’m Andy

1. The 2014 Forecast and how we got here 2. How Open will rule the Cloud 3. Crafting code for the Cloud

The 2014 Cloud Forecast?

MOAR APPS!

MOAR DATA!

MOAR CLOUD!

MOAR CLOUD!

142 MEXICAN WHOOPING LLAMAS

We apologise for the fault in the slides. Use of excessive animation

and llama references are unacceptable.

Those responsible have been sacked.

The year of…?

But basically…

This is all about PEOPLE

How did we get here?

They brought the gubbins Iaas = the new hardware

They brought the APIs and data (aka MBaaS) APIs - mashups, data, agility

* and e.g. Flickr, Twitter, etc - “Web 2.0”

They brought the rapid development push ‘myapp’ -> running

They brought the business challenge data -> advantage

Characteristics ☞ Expectations

• vast scale

• innovation

• rapid data analysis and iteration

• agility of delivery (even at scale)

Expectation Enterprise -> people, apps, data

How to be those guys?

To succeed where those guys have? Platform

Rumours of the demise of PaaS are greatly exaggerated…

Why Open wins

An important year in software

Hello everybody out there using minix - !

I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.

21+ years later: Linux has won

Linux runs everywhere (even old versions, on crashy airline entertainment systems...)

#P0WN ALL TEH

GADGETZ !

It runs on Windows Azure! Jun 2012, w. Canonical

Linux is ubiquitous

(but often invisible)

It works.

It works here too

No single language to “rule them all”

Data gets bigger (and faster, and needs analysis, and SCIENCE)

Composability is key

The need for speedy iteration…

Cloud Foundry - the Open PaaS

Open Source

Micro Clouds

Private Clouds

Public Clouds

“new” clouds

All the pieces to make your own!

“if you can’t open it, you don’t own it” (O’Reilly/MAKE)

Not all PaaSes are created equal...

Runs on: EC2, OpenStack, vSphere, GCE… more to come!

Crafting code for the cloud

It just makes sense 12factor.net

The 2014 Cloud Forecast?

more developers

building !

more awesome code, mobile apps and services

in the OPEN
