Who is a pet?A Pet is alive

A pet shares my lifeA pet has needs like meHe thinks feels and sees

A pet needs to be fed

And like me needs a warm bedA pet loves to be loved

He loves treats and to be hugged

A Pet is aliveA pet shares my life

A pet has needs like meHe thinks feels and sees

With my pet I will run and play

We make each other happy every dayMy pet can count always count on me

To tend to all his needs

A Pet is aliveA pet shares my life

A pet has needs like meHe thinks feels and sees

Social Justice Figures for Inspiration

• St. Francis• Florence Nightingale• Henry Bergh- ASPCA• Ghandi• Jane Addams

St. Francis

St. Francis of Assisi, is the patron saint of animals and the environment, because he dedicated his life to helping the less fortunate, and animals. Many people ridiculed him in his day, but nevertheless he was named a saint in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX. Many places have a “Blessing of the Animals” on October 4, his feast day.

Florence Nightingale(May 12, 1820-August 13, 1910)

Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy. She is famous for her nursing work during the Crimean War (1854-1856). She changed theface of nursing from a mostly untrained professionto a highly skilled and well-respected medical profession with very important responsibilities. Florence also spoke about the idea that animals have health benefits to ill people.

Henry Bergh-ASPCA

• Henry Bergh was born in 1813 and he was in the Russian Court of Czar Alexander II when he first took action against inhumanity to animals. Later he founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in New York in April 1866. His idea was that animals should be protected from cruelty.

Mahatma Gandhi(October 2, 1869-January 30, 1948)

Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbundar, India. He studied law and spoke out for the rights of Indians, both in India and in South Africa. Gandhi became a leader of India's independence movement, organizing boycotts against British institutions in peaceful forms of civil disobedience. Sadly, he was killed because of his good works. But, his name and memory live on as one of the kindest and most heroic people that ever lived.

Jane Addams(September 6, 1860-May 21, 1935)

• Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois. She is famous for being a pioneer social worker in America, a feminist, and an internationalist. She helped give food to women and children of nations at war, got the first honorary degree given to a woman from Yale, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. She also wrote a book Peace and Bread in Time of War (1922).
