1.A sense of superiority, exceptionalism

Jews "chosen people“ “But you are a chosen

people…” 1 Peter 2:9, "Chinese kids are typically raised on a diet of stories about how Chinese civilization is the oldest and

most magnificent in world history.”

Do Indian-Americans really go around thinking they’re superior? The answer is an awkward yes, if you temper superiority to mean something closer to “distinct, exceptional culture.” http://theaerogram.com/triple-package-roots-indian-american-success/

Many countries of all kinds have claimed exceptionality, including India, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exceptionalism

Some Factors which determine success:

Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld, THE TRIPLE PACKAGE: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America, Penguin Press HC, The (February 4, 2014)

A study of freshmen at 28 elite American colleges and universities in which Asian-American students earned the highest grades and entered with the highest SAT scores,

BUT had the lowest self-esteem scores of all ethnic and racial groups.

These students are being pushed to succeed, but aren't being told that they are perfect. It's the opposite of the "trophy for everyone" approach to much of American child-rearing.

2. Insecurity - a sense that they haven't done good enough,

Some Factors which determine success:

3.Good impulse control (deferred gratification)

(1972 Stanford marshmallow experiment)

Follow-up studies on these preschoolers found that those who were able to wait the 15 minutes were significantly less likely to have problems with behavior, drug addiction or obesity by the time they were in high school, compared with kids who gobbled the snack in less than a minute.

The gratification-delayers also scored an average of 210 points higher on the SAT.

Some Factors which determine success:

4. Hard work, Practice, Persistence “The 10,000 hour Rule to become

outstanding” MALCOLM GLADWELL, O u t l i e r s THE STORY OF SUCCESS

Work ethic

Persistence

Success

Some Factors which determine success:

5. Networks (Extended family, same clan …)

6. Other Factors

Some Factors which determine success:

The Buddhist and Confucian values and traditions of many Asian American families follow closely the prerequisites for the American dream— hard work, education, and achievement.

The Puritan – American Mindset of Hard work and frugality, as well as social success and wealth, were signs of the Elect. They made America successful

That puritan mindset has been abandoned by white Protestant America –

a section of the population that now has below-average wealth and success.

That used to be US

Within three generations, this upward mobility more or less burns out.

“One example: "from 1950 to 1990, Jewish high schoolers made up roughly 20% of the finalists in the prestigious, nationwide Intel Science Talent Search; since 2010, only 7%.“

"Assimilation and success weaken the insecurities and other cultural forces that drove the first and second generation to rise."

Assimilation wrecks the of impulse control, deferred gratification. (Vacation now – pay later; get things now - put it on your credit card)

What is the Long Term Outcome?

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. Deuteronomy 7:6, NIV

1.Exceptional, SpecialBut you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9, NIV

What does the Bible say?

The LORD will make you the head, not

the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.

Deuteronomy 28:13

If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.

Deuteronomy 28:1

2. Insecurity, Greatness Conditional

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. James 5:7 11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two

sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living Luke 15:11-13 (NIV)

3. Impulse Controlled, Delayed Gratification (Patience?)
