Mapping case studies to the SAMR model

What does good practice look like?14/05/2015

The SAMR model encourages teachers

to explore technology and promotes

GOOD

PRACTICE in considering why we are using the

technology and what impact it’s

having on the students

Scott Hibberson

Aims

• Explore case studies that highlight the four key stages of the SAMR model

• Identify key elements of each of the four stages and how they apply to the teacher and student

• Reflect on how the SAMR model applies to your own subject area

The SAMR Model

“In a nutshell, think about SAMR model as a blueprint scaffolding your technology integration into education. It is a framework through which you can assess and evaluate the technology you use in your classroom.”

Substitution – spot the difference?

14/05/2015 What does good practice look like? 5

Substitution – what does it look like?

» Little to no input from learners

» Teacher ‘substitutes’ the use of an interactive whiteboard for a normal whiteboard

» The task is the same but the tool used is different

» Traditional chalk and talk delivery by the teacher (very teacher-centric)

Augmentation – adding value outside of the lesson

Augmentation – what does it look like?

» Conversation practice is allowed to continue asynchronously via the Edmodo platform

» ESOL students gain peer feedback as well as feedback from the teacher

» ESOL students can learn on the go using the Edmodo app on their phones

» The teacher centricity from the substitution stage has changed (slightly)

Modification – students as digital change agents

Modification – what does it look like?

» There is a significant functional change in the classroom – the teacher/student dynamic has changed.

» Computer technology is necessary to perform the task of crowdsourcing ideas from geographically dispersed people.

» Ideas about how to make best use of technology come from the students themselves.

Redefinition – digital storytelling

What does good practice look like?14/05/2015

Redefinition – what does it look like?

» The students themselves, rather than the teacher, are authors of the digital narrative.

» The technology and subject go together to tell a digitally rich story where new skills are developed (video editing/story telling) in tandem with the subject content in order to produce a professional video.

» The digital content is co-created allowing for peer support and helps to inform future learning.

» The learning paradigm has moved towards a more student-centred model.

Steps to take forward

• What will I gain by replacing the task with the new technology?

• Does the technology do anything that improves the task?

• Does the task change significantlyby using technology?

• Does the use of technology introduce the creation of new tasks?

Reflection

» What one example can you think of from your own area that fits into the SAMR model?

» Is it substitution, augmentation, modification or redefinition?
