“CUSE grants will support a broad range of research areas ranging from basic, translational and applied sciences, engineering, social sciences, liberal arts, visual, fine and performing arts, humanities, to creative research and various other forms of scholarly activities.”

Project NarrativeMake sure formatting requirements are set correctly and observe the page limitation for the specific Cuse grant program you are applying.

Note: Avoid excessive jargon in proposal narratives, as reviewers may not be experts in your specific area.
Intent to Leverage CUSE fundingThis section should be used to prospectively discuss how you will leverage CUSE funding to further pursue extramural grant funding sourceso List what funding agencies & specific programs you plan to apply for, and
how CUSE funding will be impactful
Demonstrate how you will show impact from this grant external to the institution
For disciplines where external funding is limited, leveraging success through the creation of new scholarship, collaborations or educational programs can be described

Funds can be requested for the following allowable costs:o Salaries & Wages for PIs and Co-I’s – limited to one (1) month
o Other Salaries & Wages – For I2 & G2G grants, allowable for postdocs, students, and essential staff
o Fringe Benefits – the budget template will assign current fringe benefits corresponding to the salary line
o Equipment – total is limited to $5,000 I2 and G2G
o Travel – Must be directly related to CUSE grant project activities
o Other Direct Costs – Materials & Supplies (ex. meeting supplies, books), Consultant Costs (limit 25% of budget), Purchased Services (ex. transcription or translation costs),Rental of Off-site Facilities, Human Subject payments, and other relevant expenses (ex. archive fees, food & beverages for all-day workshops)

Curriculum Vitae/BiosketchProvide a CV in any extramural agency format (e.g. NIH, NSF, DOD) for each PI/Co-PI, limited to academic & research credentials
If not utilizing an extramural agency format, include the following:o Brief summary of investigator’s qualifications for proposed projecto Brief summary of teaching, scholarship and research expertiseo Education history (degrees) and relevant employment historyo Relevant honors and awards (limit to five)o Relevant products, including: Peer reviewed publications, books, book

Intended to minimize potential conflicts of interest in the review process
Include the following:o Co-authors on publications w/in past 3 yrs, including pending publications
and submissions.o All collaborators on projects w/in past 3 yrs, including current and planned
collaborations. o All thesis or postdoctoral advisees/advisors
Review Process 1st Stage Screening1st level screening will consist of checking margins, page limits, font sizes, line spacing, and inclusion of required sections etc.
Program specific items will be checked (e.g. external reviews for G2G)
Compliant proposals will then be prepared for distribution to review panels
Non-compliant proposals will be returned to applicants without review
Merit Review ProcessReviewers from a variety of disciplines from across the University will be engaged. Evaluation Criteria: Overall Merit (25%) Qualifications of Personnel and Adequacy of Facilities (25%) Project Relevance (25%) Efforts and Success for extramural funding (25%)
Reviewers will sort proposals into categories: Must fund High priority for funding Medium priority for funding Lower medium priority for funding Low Priority for funding Do Not fund
Funding decisions based on evaluation rankings & availability of funds
CUSE Review Process - 201812 review teams formed, with 3 reviewers/ per team
4 additional alternate reviewers were brought on to minimize COIs
ALL reviewers signed Non-disclosure agreements to maintain confidentiality
Expertise of review teams were matched with proposals to the degree reasonable/practicable
Each review team assigned between 7 -11 proposals to review/score
2 review teams were exclusively tasked with reviewing Humanities topic areas. Teams were multi-disciplinary, with lead reviewer assignments made with intent of most closely aligning expertise to proposals
