    Awellheadisthecomponentatthesurfaceofanoilorgaswellthatprovidesthestructuralandpressurecontaininginterfaceforthedrillingandproductionequipment.

    Theprimarypurposeofawellheadistoprovidethesuspensionpointandpressuresealsforthecasingstringsthatrunfromthebottomoftheholesectionstothesurfacepressurecontrolequipment.

    Whiledrillingtheoilwell,surfacepressurecontrolisprovidedbyablowoutpreventer(BOP).Ifthepressureisnotcontainedduringdrillingoperationsbythecolumnofdrillingfluid,casings,wellhead,andBOP,awellblowoutcouldoccur.

    Oncethewellhasbeendrilled,itiscompletedtoprovideaninterfacewiththereservoirrockandatubularconduitforthewellfluids.ThesurfacepressurecontrolisprovidedbyaChristmastree,whichisinstalledontopofthewellhead,withisolationvalvesandchokeequipmenttocontroltheflowofwellfluidsduringproduction.

    Wellheadsaretypicallyweldedontothefirststringofcasing,whichhasbeencementedinplaceduringdrillingoperations,toformanintegralstructureofthewell.Inexplorationwellsthatarelaterabandoned,thewellheadmayberecoveredforrefurbishmentandreuse.

    Offshore,whereawellheadislocatedontheproductionplatformitiscalledasurfacewellhead,andiflocatedbeneaththewaterthenitisreferredtoasasubseawellheadormudlinewellhead.
