Numbers of Interest:
Numbers do not tell us everything. Nor are they the final answer. But we can learn from what we see and what we can measure.
Our prayer is that this box will constantly show a growing church.

The Purpose From here to heaven… Following God wherever He leads us.
April 30, 2017
WELCOME VISITORS!WELCOME VISITORS!
We are thankful you are with us today as we worship our God and Savior. Our prayer is that you will encounter Him today.
A nursery for small children is available in the east hall off the lobby.
What will you experience at Westview?
Praise through song. It is the tradition of our heritage to sing a cappella (without instruments) as we encourage everyone to be involved in uplifting praise.
We value the Bible. You will hear God’s Word read and all sermons will give the utmost respect and priority to Scripture.
We share the Lord’s Supper every week remembering Christ’s sacrifice that provides us forgiveness as we celebrate our salvation through Him.
We do not expect our guests to give financially to our work. We depend on the generous and godly giving of all Westview members to provide the funds needed to implement God’s plans for this church.
We invite you to stay for Bible classes following our worship time. We hope you have been blessed today!

Is there a “Christian” Sabbath? #11
Commentary from a common Terry
To this point in this series it has been a fairly straight-forward study about the Sabbath. We have looked, in detail, at the purpose and meaning of the Sabbath under the Law of Moses and its usefulness to the spiritual health of the Israelites. We studied Jesus’ teachings about the Sabbath, which primarily was in response to his critics’ grumbling about actions he or his disciples took on the Sabbath Day. But what about post-gospels, from Acts to the end of Revelation? The New Testament church, the New Covenant people are now the people of God. How does the Sabbath fit in? Does it fit in? The Sabbath is specifically men-tioned 57 times in the New Testament, all but eleven in the four gospels. Of those eleven remaining references, nine are in the book of Acts and there is no “New Covenant” teaching at-tached to those references. All nine in Acts are simply time sequence or dis-tance uses. “On the Sabbath they went to the synagogue….” The word was read, “on the Sab-bath….” Paul would meet with people to discuss scripture “on the Sabbath.” They traveled “a Sabbath’s day’s distance….” You get the idea. No teaching about how to incorporate the Sabbath into the New Covenant Christian age. That leaves only two references to the Sabbath in the final 22 books of the New Testament, from Romans through Revelation. The first is in Paul’s letter to the church in Colossae. And, it is used in a negative sense. Paul stressed to the Christians that they had been released from the burden of the old covenant Law of Moses and it’s stipulations of certain practices that established a righteous response to God. I don’t be-lieve Paul banned the practice of some
Jewish customs. What concerned him was that the way this was being en-forced by some “spiritual referees” in the church was replacing Jesus as Lord and Deliverer and placing the emphasis of spiritual success on the fulfillment of those practices. So he wrote, “Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with re-gard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.” Colossians 2:16 There were those people watch-ing the church community to see if it observed those holy days of the Jew-ish tradition, including the practice of certain dietary restrictions that went along with those observances. Appar-ently the salvation of people, according to these folks, depended on the contin-ued observance of such things. Paul, in the strongest language, told them to never allow themselves to be judged in such a way. To restore these days and festi-vals in the way Paul criticized was, in essence, denying the Messiahship of Jesus and the salvation he had brought to the world through the Cross. Whether it be a yearly event (festival), monthly (new moon), or weekly (Sabbath), all of these in the old law looked forward to a Savior still to come. Jesus had already come! It was the improper use of and emphasis on the old purpose of those days and weeks that Paul condemned. So in this way, Paul made it clear that the Sabbath was not be observed in any way like it was before. It had been a day of reflection and meditation with God. It was a day of anticipation of a coming Deliverer. Well, the Deliverer had come! Anything we do that de-tracts from that we shouldn’t do. That leaves one text to study—Hebrews 4:9. See you next week.
Love one another,
