Students rights and responsibilites

As a student at NSI, you have a responsibility to:

• treat other people with respect and fairness

• do all assessment tasks and examinations honestly

• do all assessment tasks by the due date or ask for an extension if there are exceptional circumstances

• return or renew library resources on time

• follow normal safety practices (e.g. wear approved clothing and protective equipment and follow directions both written and verbal given by all TAFE NSW staff)

Students rights and responsibilities NSI students have a responsibility not to:

• damage or steal property

• enter the campus with drugs, alcohol, weapons or be under the influence of drugs or alcohol

• do anything that could offend, embarrass or threaten others

• disrupt classes or use mobile phones or pagers in the classroom

• swear in classrooms and other learning areas

• smoke in college buildings

• eat, drink or smoke in the classrooms

Attendance

• Regular attendance is required in order to complete all assessments

• It is the students responsibility to catch up on work missed due to absence and to obtain notes or handouts from class missed

• Absence on weeks where tests or assessments are held require a valid reason and medical certificate

Copyright and Intellectual property

• Copyright belongs to the creator of the work

• Ask permission for use of other work or photography of others work

• Reference all sources including websites with date and url

• Avoid plagiarism by using your own words in written assessments

OH and S practices must be observed within the workroom at all times

• Fully closed in rubber sole shoes or no practical

• Correct manual handling techniques used

• Cleaning up of spills immediately and use of signage

• Work into a bin and sweep regularly

Sustainability practices • Separate all waste and dispose of in correct

bin – Recycling

– Green waste

– Non recyclables

– Paper

• Minimise use of water

• Turn off electrical appliances when not in use

• Minimise copying of resources – use online

• Support local suppliers in market

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

• Recognition of prior learning or RPL is the recognition of skills gained through informal learning, workplace learning or other courses.

• Recognition process to obtain exemptions

• Evidence required to be submitted

• Apply within first 6 weeks of course

Traineeships

• Traineeships are offered in cert II and III floristry

• Agreement between student and employer with training organization being the facilitator of training

• Benefits include employment whilst learning

• Traineeship wage paid during contract agreement

Class equipment/materials

• Materials Charge $50 – tool kit

• All cert II and III classes

• Flowers required each week for practical

• Cost estimated at $50 per week

• Some supplies from tool kit may need to be replenished throughout the course

• Student responsible for bringing required materials to class

Graduation, awards and competitions

• Graduation held in April/May each year

• Awards presented for

– Achieving highest results

– Encouragement

– Commitment to Floristry

• 4 students selected annually from 2nd year Cert III to compete for scholarships to study cert IV

• Various Industry competitions throughout the year that are supported
