Australian History

The First People

The Aboriginal people lived in Australia for 40 000 years.

The Aborigines made weapons, hunted

kangaroos and ate berries.

European Colonisation

In 1770 Captain James Cook discovered

Sydney.

1788

On the 26th January 1788, the First Fleet

arrived in Sydney. There were 11 ships and

1400 convicts, sailors and guards.

1788-1800´s

160 000 convicts were sent to Sydney and other place in Australia. Aboriginals became prisoners, were killed or chased away.

1800’s New cities were made

People could buy land

No more convicts were sent to Australia

Each state had a government

1800’s

Big farms sold food

White men could vote

Gold Rush in 1951

Houses, schools, roads, railways, telegraph systems, churches, public buildings were built

Federation

Australia became a country.1901

White Australia Policy Only white people who could speak English

could come to Australia.

Becoming a Country

WW1

1914 Australia went to war.

In 1915 Australian soldiers went to Gallipoli.

It is famous because Australians looked after each other there.

Gallipoli and the ANZAC’s

WWII

Australians fought in Europe, Papua

New Guinea and North Australia.

1950’s - 2000 The Depression

Baby Boom – lots of babies were born

Melbourne Olympics 1952, Sydney Olympics 2000

Vietnam War

Political Changes; equal pay, women’s rights, aboriginal rights, end of White Australia Policy, Aboriginal Land rights
