Warm Up – Writer’s Notebook“Puppy Adoption”
• Respond – Both of these puppies were left on your doorstep. You are not sure if your parents will agree to keep them, so you decide to write a letter to convince them.
• What appeals – emotional, logical, and ethical – will you use to persuade them?
WHAT IS RHETORIC?
• Rhetoric is the art of speaking, writing, and communicating in order to persuade effectively.
WHAT IS A RHETORICAL TECHNIQUE OR APPEAL AND HOW IS IT USED TO SELL A
PRODUCT OR IDEA?
• A rhetorical technique is a strategy that appeals to an audience’s emotion, ethics, and/or logic.
RHETORICAL STRATEGIES ARE APPEALS USED TO CONVINCE OR PERSUADE.
WHAT THE THE THREE RHETORICAL APPEALS?
• ETHOS – ETHICAL APPEAL
• LOGOS – LOGICAL APPEAL
• PATHOS – EMOTIONAL APPEAL
AN EMOTIONAL APPEAL IS…
• Emotional appeals target a person’s feelings or emotions – love, hate, fear, excitement, affection, pain, etc…
A LOGICAL APPEAL IS…
• LOGICAL APPEALS ARE BASED ON FACTS, STATISTICS, PERSONAL ANECDOTES (A SHORT PERSONAL EXPERIENCE USED TO MAKE A POINT).
• THEY APPEAL TO LOGIC AND REASON.
• PERSUASIVE WRITINGMUST HAVE THIS APPEALTO BE EFFECTIVE.
AN ETHICAL APPEAL IS…
• ETHICAL APPEALS ARE BASED ON A PERSON’S SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG.
• They appeal to a person’s moral and values.• Include character traits such as honesty,
integrity, trust, etc…
WHAT IS A “CALL TO ACTION”?
• A message that attempts to persuade a person to perform a desired action, or to do something.
• Examples: “Act Now”“please consider supporting…”“Just do it!”
