DO YOU BELIEVE IN LIFE BEFORE DEATH? Chaim Potok (1929 – 2002) was an American Jew, a writer of novels, and also a rabbi. He told the story of how, when he was a young man, his mother had her own ideas about what he should do with his life: “Chaim, I know you want to be a writer, but I have a better idea. Why don’t you be a brain surgeon? You’ll keep a lot of people from dying; you’ll make a lot of money.” “No, Mama. I want to be a writer.” Every time he came home on vacation the same conversation unfolded. “Be a brain surgeon. You’ll keep a lot of people from dying; you’ll make a lot of money.” “No, Mama. I want to be a writer.” Finally there was an explosive row: “Chaim, you’re wasting your time. Be a brain surgeon. Keep people from dying. Make money.” “Mama, I don’t want to keep people from dying. I WANT TO SHOW THEM HOW TO LIVE!” We long to be kept alive, we want our loved ones to be alive and well. Thank God for the expertise and dedication of brain surgeons! But we can still ask – what’s the point of a long life if we don’t know how to live, don’t know what life is for? The question – how will we live – is put to us all. It’s because of this question that Jesus’ words haunt me: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” I need someone to show me how to live, or at least how to try to live. Someone who is so free to live they are also free to die. Someone who assures us of what we suspected all along -‐ that ultimately life is more than health and wealth. And that the gift known in the Gospels as ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10: 10) is free.

Village speed watch Your village speed watchers need help. Can you give an hour or so every now and then to help stop speeding through the village? We are trained by the police – speeding motorists are reported and they receive a warning letter. This has helped reduce speeding – but we need some more hands to work the “speed gun”. Please give your name and contact details to Steve at steve.bowles56@btinternet.com or on paper at Peel House, HBG.

Learning from each other – Building successful learners
This half term has been packed with
exciting activities and adventures linked
to our topic ‘The Vikings are Coming!’
On the 2nd June, a Viking blowing a horn and waving an axe invaded school and took the children back in time to the days of Norsemen.
Hrothgar the Viking made camp in the school hall, he set up a tent and spread out baskets with clothes and weapons. Hrothgar told traditional tales of gods and goddesses and had some fascinating anecdotes about everyday life.
Later that week, we all headed off to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, to visit the location of a real Viking invasion. The visit was intended to provide a stimulus for creative writing and artwork. The children spent time exploring and sketching the ruins of the Priory which was brutally raided by Viking pirates in 793.
After soaking in the beautiful landscape/seascape of Lindisfarne, we took a scenic drive along the coastline, passing Bamburgh Castle before arriving in Seahouses to visit the RNLI station. We were given a guided tour and learned about the fantastic work they do saving lives at sea. The weather was great and we ended our trip eating chips overlooking the harbour.
A big thank you must go to the PFA for funding yet another fantastic trip!

Class 2 London Trip
Children in Class 2 are excitedly preparing for their residential trip to London this weekend. Historically, the annual residentials have been active breaks filled with outdoor pursuits, but this year we’d thought we’d do something different.
Leaving school at 7am on Friday morning, there’s a packed itinerary planned for the weekend. On arrival in the capital, we’ll visit the Houses of Parliament and stretch our legs, walking round the sights from St James’ Park, Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, the Cenotaph and Downing Street. There are visits planned to the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, as well as a matinee theatre performance of Matilda.
Last week, we were very pleased to welcome back into school Mark and Vicky from The Haltwhistle Film Project. They have worked with us on a number of occasions, helping to create some fantastic films. This time we’re hoping to produce our own film account of the Lindisfarne invasions. On 9th June, they spent the day assisting the children creating stop-frame animations, including accompanying sound effects. We’re really looking forward to the film premier!
