OurCubatour,onarelaxed&easypace,wasn’tmuchdifferentfromaregular

tour,exceptthatweenjoyedmoreresttimeandsawbirdsinaveryrelaxedstyle.UponarrivaltoSantaClara,wenailedthecommonandwidespreadAntilleanPalmSwiftaswellastheendemicCubanBlackbird.ThisblackbirdclosestrelativesarefoundinMexico-CentralAmericaandthenorthernPacificcoastofSouthAmerica.BesidesseeingsomeendemicandrestrictedrangedistributionbirdswenoticedthatmostoftheBorealmigrantwarblersweregonetotheirbreedinggrounds,althoughwestillenjoyedfewspecies(someinbreedingplumage!)suchasNorthernParula,Bay-breastedWarbler,Black-throatedBlue-Warbler,Yellow-throatedWarblerandPalmWarbler.

AfterSantaClaraweheadedsouth,tothefamousZapatapeninsulaandtheBayofPigs.TheZapatanationalparkwasdeclaredin1974andiscurrentlyaUNESCOBiosphereReserve.ItisthebiggestandmostimportantwetlandintheCaribbean.Here,wevisitedvariouslocationsincludingdryforest,scrubbyvegetation,coastalwetlandsandfarmland.AmongthemostimportantbirdsweenjoyedastoundingviewsoftheBeeHummingbird,theworld´ssmallestbirdandtheRed-shoulderedBlackbird,onethathasarestricteddistributionandisthreatduetohabitatloss.Thisareaprovidedviewstoabout16Cubanendemicbirds.Whatamilestone!

IntheZapatapeninsulawealsoobservedseveralotheruniquespecies,andtwothatstandamongtheendemicbirdswhereonehasuncertainaffinity(Blue-headedQuail-Dove)andanotherwithitsscientificname(genusandspecificname)givenafterasingleperson’sname,theFerminiacerverai(afterFermínCervera)orasweknowit,theZapataWren.AvisittoLaSalinaallowedustoaddwaterbirdstoourchecklistincludingAmericanFlamingo,severalspeciesofegrets,fewsandpipersandterns.

Thesecondlocationofthetourwasinthewestsideoftheisland,toSoroa,ViñalesandSanDiegodelosBaños.Herewevisiteduniquegeologicalformations,sawmoreendemicandrestricteddistributionbirdsandaddedtheimportantculturalcomponentwhenvisitedLasTerrazascommunityandinteractedwithlocalpeople.SomeofthetargetspeciesobservedweretheCubanGrassquitandCubanSolitaireandamongtheraritieswenailedtwoStygianOwlsandWhite-crownedPigeons.

ThetourconcludedwithtwofulldaysinHavanawherewefocusedinvariousculturalaspectsofCubaincludingarehearsaloftheNationalBallet,aninterpretivewalkintheBotanicalGardensandvisitedOrlandoGarrido,Cuba’smostnotoriouscontemporaryornithologist.

TyrantFlycatchers/TyrannidaeCubanPewee(E).Contopuscaribaeus.Wesawitinfiveconsecutivedays.Fondtoforestedge,openareasandmangrove.LaSagra'sFlycatcher.Myiarchussagrae.ThegenusMyiarchuscomprisessimilarandhard-to-tell-apartspeciesand,isdistributedfromsouthernUSAtoArgentina.InCuba,there´sonlyoneoptionsoitsidentificationisprettystraightforward.Wecameacrossvariouspairsofthisflycatcher.Itisusuallyassociatedwithforesthabitats.Bytheway,itscommon(andspecific)nameisafterRamóndeLaSagra(1801-1871),aCubanwriterandnaturalist.HeauthoredHistoriafísica,políticaynaturaldelaisladeCuba,in1837.GrayKingbird.Tyrannusdominicensis.ThesearelocalmigrantsthatcometoCubatobreed.Paierswereseenalmostdaily.Acommonspeciesthistimeoftheyear.LoggerheadKingbird.Tyrannuscaudifasciatus.ObservedinSoroaandLasTerrazas.Similartothepreviousonebutplumagecontrastsinheadarebolder.Voiceisdistinctive.GiantKingbird(E).Tyrannuscubensis.NicestudiesofitnearSoroa.Thisspeciesisthreatenedandapparentlyduetolossofhabitat.Furtherstudiesareneeded.

CubanSolitaire(E).Myadesteselisabeth.Ithinkeveryoneagreedthatseeingthisbirdwasnotasspectacularasitwashearingit.ThespecificnameelisabethwasgivenafterQueenIsabelIofCastileandSpain(1451-1504).Itwillremainasamysterywhythepersonthatdescribedthisspecies(Lembeye)usedtheEnglishequivalent(Elisabeth)ratherthantheSpanishname(Isabel).WeenjoyedviewsoftwoindividualssingingfromatreecontiguoustoaMogoteinViñales.Red-leggedThrush.Turdusplumbeus.AnothergorgeousspeciesoftheGreaterAntilles.Wesawitineverylocationvisitedduringthistour.BothsubspeciesfoundinCubahaveanicedarkorangebelly(schistaceus&rubripes).

GreaterAntilleanGrackle.Quiscalusniger.Thisspeciesiswidespreadandtolerateshumanpresence,likeothergrackles.Itwasseeneveryday.

PalmWarbler.Setophagapalmarum.ThisspeciesisamongthecommonestBorealmigrantsinCubaandprobablythelatesttoleaveduringthebreedingseason.Itwasfoundinedgeofforest,scrubbyvegetationandgardens.Olive-cappedWarbler.Setophagapityophila.AnotherspecialtyoftheGreaterAntilles.ThisspeciesisonlyfoundinNBahamas,WandEofCuba.WeenjoyedviewsofthreepairsnearViñales.Yellow-throatedWarbler.Setophagadominica.SeenonlyinLosCaneyes.OneofthefirstBorealmigrantstoleavetheisland.
