tour,exceptthatweenjoyedmoreresttimeandsawbirdsinaveryrelaxedstyle.UponarrivaltoSantaClara,wenailedthecommonandwidespreadAntilleanPalmSwiftaswellastheendemicCubanBlackbird.ThisblackbirdclosestrelativesarefoundinMexico-CentralAmericaandthenorthernPacificcoastofSouthAmerica.BesidesseeingsomeendemicandrestrictedrangedistributionbirdswenoticedthatmostoftheBorealmigrantwarblersweregonetotheirbreedinggrounds,althoughwestillenjoyedfewspecies(someinbreedingplumage!)suchasNorthernParula,Bay-breastedWarbler,Black-throatedBlue-Warbler,Yellow-throatedWarblerandPalmWarbler.
AfterSantaClaraweheadedsouth,tothefamousZapatapeninsulaandtheBayofPigs.TheZapatanationalparkwasdeclaredin1974andiscurrentlyaUNESCOBiosphereReserve.ItisthebiggestandmostimportantwetlandintheCaribbean.Here,wevisitedvariouslocationsincludingdryforest,scrubbyvegetation,coastalwetlandsandfarmland.AmongthemostimportantbirdsweenjoyedastoundingviewsoftheBeeHummingbird,theworld´ssmallestbirdandtheRed-shoulderedBlackbird,onethathasarestricteddistributionandisthreatduetohabitatloss.Thisareaprovidedviewstoabout16Cubanendemicbirds.Whatamilestone!

IntheZapatapeninsulawealsoobservedseveralotheruniquespecies,andtwothatstandamongtheendemicbirdswhereonehasuncertainaffinity(Blue-headedQuail-Dove)andanotherwithitsscientificname(genusandspecificname)givenafterasingleperson’sname,theFerminiacerverai(afterFermínCervera)orasweknowit,theZapataWren.AvisittoLaSalinaallowedustoaddwaterbirdstoourchecklistincludingAmericanFlamingo,severalspeciesofegrets,fewsandpipersandterns.
Thesecondlocationofthetourwasinthewestsideoftheisland,toSoroa,ViñalesandSanDiegodelosBaños.Herewevisiteduniquegeologicalformations,sawmoreendemicandrestricteddistributionbirdsandaddedtheimportantculturalcomponentwhenvisitedLasTerrazascommunityandinteractedwithlocalpeople.SomeofthetargetspeciesobservedweretheCubanGrassquitandCubanSolitaireandamongtheraritieswenailedtwoStygianOwlsandWhite-crownedPigeons.

ThetourconcludedwithtwofulldaysinHavanawherewefocusedinvariousculturalaspectsofCubaincludingarehearsaloftheNationalBallet,aninterpretivewalkintheBotanicalGardensandvisitedOrlandoGarrido,Cuba’smostnotoriouscontemporaryornithologist.
