Information Specialist
Strong persona based on survey, in-depth interview & focus group data
Sandra White is an information sepcialist. Her role consists of library management and providing internal training for how to use library services effectively. A further aspect of her role is to act as a third party searcher of information for other staff members in the organisation. Sandra can be classified as a ‘super searcher’ because she utilises advanced searching skills, that allow her to find exactly what she is looking for.

Frequency of searching Several times per day Essential aspect of their role
Awareness & Usage Regular users of NHS Evidence Simple search is a
complementary resource to HDAS
Filters are good but labels are not always meaningful
Aware of accreditation but don’t feel they would use this section of the site
I don’t really need an accreditation mark to tell whether something is credible or not but this may be useful for the staff I work with
Evidence Based Practice Challenges Have to use more than one
interface and different search strategies.
Reference manager is limited to exporting 250 items.
Access full content journal articles Overload of e-resources
Opportunities Access to non UK Resources to
give them a wider evidence base More signposting &
encouragement to ask the librarian for help with literature searches
Having something authoritative on quality and productivity
Communities of practice Create a two way relationship -
work with library services to promote their service & NHS Evidence
NHS IT services invariably block many new applications, such as blogs. Having a place where it would be possible to host these via NHS Evidence would therefore be useful.
NHS Evidence – provided by NICE
Challenges Lack of resources & equipment Low internet speeds & old computers Security restrictions and blocked
websites Lack of access to journals & full text
Opportunities Technology makes things easier
(patient records, internet) Being self motivated is important University gives access to journals University provides nurses with the skills
& confidence to search & appraise evidence
Link in with professional networks to promote NHS Evidence
Specialist Nurse
Strong persona based on survey, in-depth interview & focus group data
Shirley Richards is a 40 year old Specialist Nurse working in primary care. She is educated to degree level, has completed managerial training and is embarking on a Masters degree. She has previous experience as a district nurse. Her main duties are split between clinical and managerial responsibilities. She sees patients either in the c linic or at their home and she also has the role of an independent prescriber. As deputy manager she is required to educate and appraise staff, in addition to developing local polic ies and procedures. She has advanced IT literacy. Due to the current c limate her main goal is to stay in a job but she also strives to have an efficient department.
Type of searcher: Empowered searcher
Product Appeal Medicines topic pages Clinical topic pages New & significant evidence
alert Simple search HDAS & access to full text
Spheres of Influence
Awareness & Usage Low awareness &
usage Uses CKS but does not
know this is available on NHS Evidence
Search Behaviour
Access In the c linic she has her
own PC but is required to hot desk when on visits
Will search at home because NHS computers are too old
Reasons for searching To provide advice to
colleagues. Keeping up-to-date Unfamiliar condition To safely prescribe medicines Effective use of resources
Types of information Guidelines, National policy, J ournals, Trust policy, Patient information, Diagnosis information, Prescribing & medic ines information

information e.g. dosage & contraindications for Oxybutynin
Common resources DoH, BNF, NICE, Google, Trust intranet, Royal Colleges, Emails & Alerts, Bibliographic databases & Cochrane, Nursing Times, CKS, Professional networks
Frequency of searching Searches at least once, if
not several times a day Will search before & after

IT makes things easier because when I’m in front of the computer I’ve got all the information I need to safely prescribe
We have to stay up-to-date because we’re the ones that people look to for guidance.
