The Teamsters National UPS Negotiat-ing Committee received UPS’ initialeconomic proposal this week, and theunion will be responding during thenext round of negotiations.

The company’s action comes after the union committee made its initialeconomic proposal during the last negotiations in late April. (Go tohttp://ibt.io/April27Update to view theApril 27 update)

This week, the eighth week of negotia-tions, the company’s economic pro-posal covered Article 22—Part-timeEmployees; Article 34—Health, Wel-fare & Pension; and Article 41—Full-time Employees.

In addition, several union proposals re-main open, particularly on the impor-tant issue of subcontracting.

“As we anticipated, the company’s initial economic proposals do not ad-dress our members’ needs as written,”said Denis Taylor, Director of theTeamsters Package Division and Co-Chairman of the Teamsters Na-tional UPS Negotiation Committee.“Our mission continues to be protect-ing the livelihoods of all our UPS mem-bers and their families. Make nomistake, there is plenty of work to dobut the committee remains focused on getting the job done.”

At this stage of the negotiations, thecommittee is working to analyze andformulate counter proposals on thevarious full-time wage progressionsand part-time start rates and wagestructure.

Safety and Health Committee UpdateThe Teamsters Safety and Health Com-mittee held a union caucus on Mondayto discuss the status of all proposalsand organize its approach for the re-mainder of the negotiations. The com-mittee met with UPS on Wednesday.The union committee held a caucus for the remainder of the day preparinga response to revised proposals, andcounter proposals. Discussions cov-ered Safety and Health Committees,small bags (over 70-pound packagehandling), heat injury and illness prevention, diesel-exhaust systems,

building heat, package car grip stripsand heaters, building inbound/out-bound security procedures, and airportbadging. The company chose to post-pone further discussion until the nextnegotiations.

UPS Freight ProgressThe Teamsters National UPS FreightNegotiating Committee reached sev-eral tentative agreements this week:Article 7—Grievance Machinery; Arti-cle 17—Pay Period; Article 18—WorkDay/Work Week; and Article 20—Co-operation of Employees/Fair Day’s Pay.

In addition, both sides tentatively agreedto language for monetary penalties fordelayed payment of grievance awardsor settlements, and payroll shortages.

The next round of negotiations will takeplace June 4-7.
