THE PRESIDENT’S COMMENTARY Teamster Retirees Are Still Active In Their Golden Years by Marvin Kropp, President, Joint Council 13 Our Teamster retirees are second to none when it comes to staying active and fighting the good fight against corporate greed, and the attack on the middle class. Joint Council 13 is very lucky to have several Teamster Retirees clubs in our Council. As President of Joint Council 13, I’m lucky to have the chance to talk to many of our retired Teamster members who were there back as far as the 1930’s. I love to sit and listen to the stories of those who have come before us. Just when we think we have it bad in today’s economies, and the problems we deal with, you should hear some of the stories I have heard of from days gone by. If not for them, none of us would be enjoying the wages, benefits and working condi- tions we have today. These brothers and sisters put it on the line everyday back then. Many of them assisted in organizing their own shop, which isn’t easy now, and surely wasn’t back then. Many of our retirees still show up for every event we have today just as they did back when they were members. They still are active at our State Capitol and travel every month while in session to preserve our rights as union members, and to pro- tect our families. Anytime when I need any assistance I know I can call upon our retir- ees to show up. They are really the back- bone of this great union. My hat goes off to Ron Gushleff a retired Local 600 member who is the President of the Eastern Mis- souri Retiree Club and his fellow officers. Brother Gushleff works hard at staying up to date on concerns of our Teamster membership and issues that would affect us. There hasn’t been one time that I have asked Ron to help us with some type of ac- tion that he hasn’t been there with a room full of retirees to assist. My home Local 618 has a retirees club that was chartered in 1986, and so do most other locals. Most of the clubs have monthly meetings to get together to conduct business, and talk old times. So be sure to contact your local to obtain more information on how you can become a member of a Teamster Retiree club I’m sure they would love to have you. So just because you don’t hit a time clock anymore, and have finally reached the point that we all want to get to at some time in our life, stay active join a Team- ster Retiree Club you won‘t regret it. It’s a great way to meet other Teamster members and find out what others are doing during retirement. As I like to say, “Once a Team- ster, always a Teamster,” join your local’s retiree club! TeamsTer issouri Official publication of Teamsters Joint Council 13 Volume 18, No. 6 • June, 2013 by James P. Hoffa, General President, International Brotherhood of Teamsters Published in The Detroit News on April 10, 2013 The anti-crowd is at it again. Not satisfied with anti-worker, anti-union and anti-living wage, extremist politi- cians are now anti-earned sick leave. Legislation was approved by com- mittees in the state House and Senate that would ban local governments from requiring employers to allow paid or unpaid sick leave that isn’t required by federal or state law. It’s no surprise that this latest shame- ful attack on Michigan workers isn’t the only one. Once again, the plan to dial back the clock on workers is a vast, coordinated assault engineered by the corporate-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC, to inden- ture workers to the almighty powerful corporations. The onslaught is in response to movements in cities such as New York, Washington, Seattle and Portland, Ore., to require businesses to offer paid sick leave to workers. Corporate-backed bills like what we’re seeing here at home have passed in Wisconsin, Louisiana and Mississip- pi and are being considered in Florida, Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma and Washington. It’s enough to make you sick. The so-called justification is an oft- repeated refrain – paid sick leave hurts businesses by raising administration costs and putting them at an unfair dis- advantage. But workers without access to paid sick time are more likely to go to work sick, putting at risk their co-workers and customers and costing an estimated $160 billion a year in lost productivity. About 40 million workers, or 40 per- cent of the work force, cannot take sick days without losing pay or their jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statis- tics. And children are more likely to go to school sick when their parents can’t take off work to care for them. The Family Medical Leave Act pro-vides only unpaid leave and applies toworkerswhoareemployedatbusinesseswithmorethan50workers.
