1

*Standard 2.2

Understand how human influences

impact the lithosphere.

2

*2.2.1

Explain the consequences of

human activities on the lithosphere (such as

mining, deforestation, agriculture,

overgrazing, urbanization, and land use) past and present.

3

*What are various types of land uses?

Urbanization: Where the land is used to build cities and town, get larger as more people move in

Deforestation: When trees are cut down and cleared from the forest

Agriculture: Science of farming and cultivating

4

* What are consequences for land uses?

Run off is a large consequence for land uses. There is also many

biosphere consequences including carrying capacity.

5

* How do humans impact the lithosphere?

Pollution, depletion of nutrients, depletion of space, depletion of water areas causing problems of run off and eventually flooding.

6

* How do humans maximize sustainable use of natural resources?

Increase energy and water conservation

Reduce and eventually eliminate the use of harmful substances

Make efficient use of available materials and resources

7

* How do humans impact the shorelines?

Structural damage, arrival of oil, change of land use

8

* How do humans impact the mountainsides?

Structural damage (Mining, roads, erosion etc), deforestation leading to landslides and avalanches, pollution

9

*2.2.2

Compare the various methods humans use to

acquire traditional energy sources (such as peat, coal, oil, natural gas,

nuclear fission, and wood)

10

*What are the methods of obtaining traditional energy resources?

Harvesting (peat and wood)

Mining (Coal, radioactive materials)

Drilling (oil and natural gas)

11

*What is harvesting?

To gather, store, and utilize

In this case we are talking about wood and peat (Decayed vegetation), which are

harvested by deforestation etc

This is used for an energy source as heat

12

*What is mining?

The obtaining of coal and other minerals from underground.

13

*What is drilling?A hole is used to dig deep into the earth

for natural recourses like oil.

What is it called when we drill for natural gas in the rocks?

14

* How do these methods affect the environment?

Harvesting: Deforestation

Mining: Pollution, structural damage

Drilling: Costly, can cause massive pollution problems,
