The real changes are not technological…
but new processes, business models and cultures enabled by technology.
E.g. the old media industry business model

No wonder the old publishing industry has been making noises New disruptive business models do not have powerful special interest corporations and cannot afford lobbyists.

Impacts over decades Most Finnish software companies
have been founded by programmersthat started with Commodore 64publishded in 1982. In the 1980´s Finland had a vibrant home computer culture. Luckily, in spite of warnings, not all kids were pulled away from home computers. Particularly the Finnish Demoscene phenomenon boosted Finnish ICT sector.
Where could we find corresponding inspiration for the children of 2010’s to excel in 2030’s? E.g. In Pyhtää kids are learning to use 3D printers at school. Or do we leave finding the keys to future success to kids’ own devices, again?

Finland, the underachiever of digitalisation
Finland has the best prerequisites in the world for utilization of IC technologies But as users of digital technologies, Finns are on the fifth place Particularly public sector is a weak ICT user (12. place) The impact of ICT on Finnish citizens’ lives is also weak (12. place).
E.g. the ICT equipment of Finnish schools is among the best in Europe … but ICT is used less in Finnish schools
than in any other European country

Opportunities? E.g. cyber security! Finnish data security cluster is very strong
SSH, F-Secure, Stonesoft, Blancco, Nixu, …
Finnish mobile technology cluster is still there Especially mobile networks
Finnish automation and robotics cluster needs work We are years behind competition
Finnish usability research is good but application poor Our attitude towards end users definitely requires work
Public commitment and jurisdiction still weak Minimalistic cyber threat monitoring and defence resources Public authority jurisdictions not sufficient for the task at hand Research and education requires bootstrapping

For example our _new_ communication legislation focuses on traditional mass media.
How about a 15.6 million view ”home video”?

Combining strengths with weaknesses
We need to rely on our strengths while we address our weaknesses in order to build a Finnish cyber security cluster from these parts.
We need a cyber Commodore 64 to inspire our next generation.
Finland won’t be saved by wrecking ATMs and milking robots …… and distributing hand saws.
