Growers Guide 2010-2011 Tobacco Farm Quarterly
In a conversation I had not long ago with a tobacco grower, he said farmers were the ultimate gam-blers, putting everything on the line each year with the belief they could best the elements and produce crops that would translate to financial success. It’s hard to argue with that line of thinking.
For tobacco farmers , there is cer ta inly the potential for a solid payoff at the end, and pre- season contracts from buyers help alleviate much of the consternation for those fortunate enough to get them. However, given the volatility of the industry—between the federal government trying to oversee it, taxes, smoking bans, foreign com-petition, weather and everything else—it does get more and more difficult each year for the average tobacco grower to ante up. Large tobacco farms have two significant advantages in that they are more likely to be able to renew contracts each year and they can better afford to invest in equipment and infrastructure that make the operation more efficient and cheaper to run.
For smaller farms, however, the decision to invest in new equipment can be difficult. It’s hard enough to decide to make major purchases like replacing equipment or adding extra barns even if you are sure you’ll still be in the crop five years down the road. Unfortunately, more and more the question is not “Do we make this major purchase or go with what we have?” it’s “Do we make this major purchase or do we just get out of tobacco altogether?” And that decision gets a little more difficult each year as farm owners get older.
One survey says the average age of tobacco growers today is 56 years old. In the conventional job market, that’s only nine years away from when most people traditionally retire. While most farm-ers don’t just pick up and move to Florida to play shuffleboard when they turn 65, as they get older the thought of long-term personal financial security does have to weigh on any substantial farm invest-ment.
The good news is that tobacco farmers are a steadfast group, most of whom have worked the crop their entire l ives and are deeply passion-ate about it. That devotion is what keeps so many in the business and is absolutely essential to the
Amer ican tobacco indus t ry . Without the individuals who own and work those farms—who provide jobs, who are so essential to the local economies and who provide an irreplace-able tax base to the federal economy—this would become just another sterile industry that eventually succumbs to foreign markets.
Tobacco Farm Quarterly exists to help you, those who are passionate about being tobacco growers. We can’t tell you the exact best way to work your particular piece of land, but we try to keep you informed about research, news and inno-vations that we hope will be useful. And that’s also why we produce this growers guide, to give you a one-stop resource where you can find all the people and the companies that exist to assist you. We hope you will utilize the information contained inside as you finish out this growing season and as you start making those purchasing decisions so you can ante up again in 2011 and beyond.

Healthy Planet. Healthy People.
Please contact one of these distributors:North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia: Allen Warren 252-341-5753 adjallen@gmail.comTennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Missouri Bootheel: Steve Mosely 731-336-2366 mozman09@yahoo.comBioBased USA of East Bend, NC reserves the name SoySoap for its family of biobased, non-toxic “nano-technology” surfactants to enhance plant growth and clean up our environment. Authorized distributors pri-vate-label each BioBased USA product under registration requirements of their state or country.
WhatSoySoapcan do foryour profitsthis season!
In 2008 and 2009, more than 75 innovative growers of alltypes of tobacco found that tobacco is one of the most
responsive crops when treated with a new “nanotech”surfactant, SoySoap. Results reported by farmers:
Burley— Allen Warren and his sons (above) of Stokes,NC raised 4.5 acres of burley in 2009. What they saw:
1. High-quality leaves earned premium prices. Burleyfrom one acre which Allen sprayed twice with SoySoapsold for $1.84 per pound, with most bales grading 1.Burley from 3.5 acres sprayed only once brought $1.80per pound and graded 1 or 2.
2. Outstanding yield. In Allen’s area, a 2,000-lb. peracre burley yield is considered good. Tobacco which Allentreated twice yielded around 3,000 pounds. Tobacco treat-ed with SoySoap just once yielded around 2,300 pounds.
3. There was virtually no disease in Allen’s tobacco, though he didn’t fumigate the soil. Insect pressure waslight, indicating a naturally healthy crop with a strongimmune system.
4. Allen estimates his tobacco sales were $1,500 peracre higher because of higher yield and grades.
Flue-cured— Farmers using SoySoap have seenyield gains up to 50%, plus better-curing tobacco thatgrades higher. Mark Smitherman of East Bend, NC says:“You can smell the healthier aroma of the high-qualityflue-cured leaf.” Improvement in flue-cured leaf density is asign of quality that flue-cured buyers like. In fact, tobaccogrowers who can’t raise high-grade flue-cured and burley
are having a tougher time than ever to secure a firm contract. Flue-cured grower Larry Doub says that in 2008, North
Carolina growers who baled their first priming of flue-curedinto the usual 4x4x4 bales found at the scales that their baleswere often up to 200 lbs. heavier than the 800-lb. maximumweight per bale. They learned to cut back on the volume oftobacco in a bale. They had more pounds to sell, at higher grades!
Dark-fired— These producers have a special need forquality leaf with good finish. Todd Harton of Cadiz, KY says heharvested 250 to 300 lbs. more dark-fired tobacco per acre withSoySoap in 2009. Quality was excellent. Todd says theSoySoap-treated tobacco took finish easier: “We only had to firetwice on some tobacco we sprayed two times with SoySoap.”Todd raises 300 acres of dark-fired. Assuming 250 lbs. per acremore yield worth $600 per acre, that’s $180,000 more gross income.
Cold weather in Fall 2009 revealed another benefit ofSoySoap: Frost protection. In mid-October 2009, Barry Newsomeof Farmington, KY heard a forecast low of 29oF the night of Oct.17. He called for an immediate delivery of SoySoap for hisdark-fired tobacco, and sprayed just ahead of the cold night.Freezing temps lasted six hours overnight on Oct. 17. Iceformed on the leaves of his tobacco, but the crop had no injury.Nearby tobacco and other crops had killing freeze damage fromthe 29oF low the night of Oct. 17.
This season, more tobacco growers than ever are orderingSoySoap and learning more effective ways to use it — fromseedling root treatment to field spraying. Our experienced dis-tributors are ready to help you cash in on its benefits!
