TIDBITS® LEARNS THAT GRASS IS NOT JUST FOR MOWING

by Patricia L. CookThis Tidbits examines grasses around the world. There are many varieties of grasses found from the freezing North and South Poles to many deserts and the lands along the sultry hot equator. •Grasses belong in the plant family botanistscallPoaceae.Grassesareconsideredfloweringplants,buttheflowersarenotshowyastheyareon,forexample,rosesandsunflowers.Thislackof showiness is due to the fact that grasses are wind pollinated and not pollinated by insects. The colorful blooms ofmost flowering plantsareneededtoattractpollinatinginsects.

• The grass family is very large, containing anestimated 10,000 species worldwide. Over1,000speciesoccurinNorthAmerica.

•Grassesrangewidelyinshapeandsize,rangingfromgolfcourseturfandlawngrasstowheat,corn,rice,sugarcaneandbamboo.

NOT JUST FOR MOWING (continued):• All of our cereal grains belong to the grassfamily, includingwheat, rice, wildrice, corn, oats, barley, milletandrye.

Since about 1880, much of the nativegrasslands have been dissected by agriculture. Oneofthelastremnantsofthisvastgrasslandarea untainted by agriculture is the Flint Hills region in eastern Kansas. Ecologists referto this ecosystem as tallgrass prairie, andpreservationofapieceof it isassured in theTallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City,Kansas.

• Grainsareoneofthefourprimaryfoodgroupsidentified in the nutritional guidelines postedby theU. S.Department ofAgriculture.Therecommendeddailygrain intake for adults is5-8 ounces (141.7-226.8 g) with at least half of thisintakebeingwholeandnotrefinedgrain.

TheUSDAwebsite,www.choosemyplate.gov,has good information on this subject.

• Theconnectionbetweengrains, carbohydratesandobesityisahottopicofdiscussionamongnutrition experts in the United States. TheGrains Food Foundation (GFF) notes thatwholegrainsareimportantsourcesofiron, anutrient critical to production and release ofenergy in the body. The GFF further notesthat the three nutrients selenium, potassiumand magnesium found in whole grain foods collectivelymayhelpboost immunity, lowerbloodpressureandpreventheartdiseaseandsome forms of cancer.
