Tidbits® BRINGS YOU A VARIETY OFWINTER SPORTS
by Kathy WolfeWhether you’re a spectator or a participant, there’s something for everyone this winter in the sports arena. Tidbits presents some interesting info about several favorites.• It’s most probable that the Scandinavians invented the sport of skating by strapping ox or elk leg bones to their boots with leather straps. Five-thousand-year-old skates have been found in Finland, and were a mode of transportation rather than a form of entertainment. Metal blades didn’t come along until the 13th century. • The game of ice hockey originated in eastern Canada in the mid-1800s. The first organized indoor hockey game was played in March of 1875 at Montreal’s Victoria skating rink in front of 40 spectators. • Manitoba-born Mervyn “Red” Dutton was serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in France during World War I when an exploding shell filled his leg with 48 fragments of shrapnel. When doctors informed him that his very life depended on amputating the leg, he refused, citing his love of hockey. His leg was placed at a 30-degree angle for the next 14 months. Dutton recovered, going on to play pro hockey for 15 years and serving as president of the NHL. He was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1958.

• No wonder they call him Mr. Hockey! Gordie Howe is the ultimate record-holder, beginning with the most NHL games played, 1,767, and the only player to play in five different decades, from the 1940s up to the 1980s. Although he retired in 1971 after 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, he came out of retirement two years later to play in the World Hockey Association until 1980. When he retired at age 52, he became the oldest NHL player to retire, and the only one to play after age 50. • The Winter Olympics were officially held for the first time in 1924 in Chamonix, France, and were called “International Winter Sports Week.” There were 16 events in six different sports, with 258 athletes participating. Four years later, the event moved to St. Moritz, Switzerland, and the number of athletes jumped to 464. By 1952, there were 694 athletes participating in Oslo, Norway, increasing to 1,272 in Sarajevo in 1984, and an all-time high of 2,566 in 2010 in Vancouver. Vancouver’s Olympics featured 86 events in seven different sports. • Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie competed in her first Olympics at Chamonix at age 11, finishing dead last. But just four years later she took the gold medal, followed by two more wins in 1932 and 1936. Her performances took place on outdoor rinks in the cold and wind. Although she performed in a knee-length wool skirt, she didn’t need to worry about that hampering her jumps – in her day it was deemed “unladylike to jump into the air” or perform spins. Sonja retired at age 23, moved to Hollywood, and became one of the industry’s highest paid movie stars of her day. • Dick Button, former network sports commentator, was the men’s figure-skating Olympic gold medalist for 1948 and 1952, and is still a record-holder as the youngest man, at age 18, to win the Olympic figure skating title. He was the first to ever perform a triple-spin jump and the double axel jump, as well as inventing the flying camel spin. • Figure skaters complete many triple axels, but what exactly is it, and why is it called that? The axel is a move created in 1882 by a Norwegian figure skater named Axel Paulsen. For the single axel, the skater launches into the air off one foot, spins around 1 ½ times, and lands on the opposite foot, going backward. The triple axel is 3 ½ rotations. Don’t confuse these with the Lutz, when the skater starts out backward, leaps into the air off the toe pick, spins, and lands on the same foot.
• Eddie Eagan was the Olympic champion in boxing’s light-heavyweight division at the 1920 Summer Olympics. Twelve years later at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics, Eagan was a member of the gold medal winning four-man bobsled team, making him the first person to win in both Summer and Winter Olympics. He had taken up bobsledding a mere three weeks before the Olympics. • Bobsled tracks are made of concrete and coated with ice. They are about 4,000 to 4,200 feet (1,200 to 1,300 m) in length and have at least 15 curves. The sleds typically move along about 93 mph (150 km/hr). The very first Winter Olympics featured the four-man bobsled race, and the two-man event was added in 1932. • The East German women’s luge team had a unique strategy for the 1968 Grenoble Olympics. They heated the runners on their sleds, which caused the ice to melt, increasing their speed. No surprise that the women came in first, second, and fourth in the competition! Once their tactics were discovered, they were all disqualified and their medals were revoked. • Anders Haugen of the United States received his bronze medal for ski jumping in 1974. What’s unusual about that? Anders was 86 years old! He had actually competed in Chamonix in 1924, but a calculation error put him in fourth place. Fifty years later, a Norwegian sports historian noticed the blunder and Anders was awarded his medal by the daughter of the actual fourth place finisher, who had taken the bronze home years before. • It might look like Alpine ski jumpers soar miles above the crowd, but in reality, they are rarely more than about 18 feet (5.5 m) above the ground. Jumpers reach speeds of up to 65 mph (104 km/hr).• The biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship, was originally a military training exercise. Over the 12.5-mile (20-km) course, the athlete must switch from arduous skiing with a rifle on his/her back to the intense focus of shooting. The sport wasn’t an official part of the Olympics until 1960 for men and 1992 for women. • While Alaska’s Iditarod is probably the most famous dog sled race, the 1,049-mile (1,688-km) trip from Anchorage to Nome is not the longest. That honor belongs to the Beringia Trail in Russia, where the world’s longest race takes place on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The trail is 1,270 miles (2,044 km) long in an area where 29 active volcanoes dot the landscape. ■

• During the Island’s peak years, 1900 to 1914, 5,000 to 10,000 people were passing through every day. After World War I, the U.S. established embassies worldwide, enabling immigrants to complete paperwork and medical exams in their own countries, and by 1924, only those with paperwork problems were sent to Ellis Island. During World War II, it was a detention center for captured enemy seamen, and was also used as a Coast Guard training facility. In 1954, it officially closed and remained abandoned until 1976, when it was opened to the public on a limited basis for tours. The structure underwent a massive $160 million restoration during the 1980s, and now receives 2 million visitors a year.• Many well-known immigrants were processed through Ellis Island, including Irving Berlin, Max Factor, Rudolph Valentino, and Cary Grant, who arrived at age 16. The family of entertainer Bob Hope, who arrived at age 4 with his mother and four brothers in 1907, has established a memorial library in his name in the restored facility. ■
ELLIS ISLAND January 1 is Ellis Island Day, memorializing the portal through which more than 12 million immigrants entered the U.S. between 1892 and 1954. Let’s learn more about this facility that was the gateway to the new world for so many. • Ellis Island hasn’t always been known by that name. The Mohegan Indians dubbed it Gull Island, while early colonists called it Oyster Island. When pirates and convicts were hanged there in the mid-1700s, a tool known as a gibbet was used, and the island became known as Gibbet Island. New York businessman Sam Ellis purchased it in 1776, and ran a tavern and picnic area there. • In 1808, the U.S. Government bought the island from Ellis’ heirs for $10,000 in order to establish a defense system to protect New York City. A fort was built, which, during the Civil War, housed prisoners, as well as weapons and ammunition for the Union Army. Ellis Island became the first federal immigration station in 1890. • The island, located just off the New Jersey coast near the Statue of Liberty, was originally 3.3 acres, but was expanded to 27.5 acres as landfill was added to the site, along with excess dirt from the excavation of New York City’s subway system. A new wooden structure opened on New Year’s Day of 1892, with a 15-year-old Irish girl named Annie Moore processed as the very first immigrant. Five-and-a-half years later, a fire raged through the complex, burning it to the ground, taking with it all of the U.S. immigration records dating back to 1855. A new fireproof structure opened in 1900. • Medical clearance was a source of anxiety for many immigrants who feared being turned away at the gate for miscellaneous maladies. First- and second-class passengers were not subject to the medical exam, with the assumption that they were less likely to be a medical burden to the government. Because third-class “steerage” passengers traveled in the lower level of ships under more unsanitary conditions, they were required to undergo the three-to-five-hour inspection, which included answering 29 questions. • Those who did not pass the medical exam were ones with a contagious disease, who were excluded from entry. Ellis Island gained a reputation as the “Island of Tears” for those who were turned away, while in actuality, only 2% of all immigrants were denied entry during all the years of operation.

BAD BREATHDear Dr. Colbert: How do I get rid of bad breath? -- Pauline H., Farmington Hills, MI
Answer: Getting rid of bad breath starts with finding out what is causing it. I frequently find that bad breath is caused by substandard oral health. Sometimes people are not even aware that they are not performing oral hygiene as effectively as they could be. The first step in curing bad breath is to make an appointment with your dentist. At your appointment the dental hygienist and the dentist will be able to evaluate your oral health. Once the team has examined you they can put together a plan to start improving your
oral health. Also the team knows how to check for any associated health problems that might be contributing to your bad breath. Part of the plan will involve will be alterations to your brushing, flossing, and tongue cleaning regimen. The dentist may also refer you to your primary care physician to check for problems with your sinus and stomach problems in addition certain foods and medications, and other factors can contribute to bad breath.

Dear Dr. Donohue: I need help with acid reflux. I have battled it for seven years, and until recently I have used Prilosec, but it has stopped working for me. I tried AcipHex and Protonix but didn’t feel well when taking them. Now I’m on Prevacid. Is it OK to take indefinitely? I wonder about Nexium. My doctor told me to take any acid reducer that works. What do you consider the best long-term medicine? --F.H.
Answer: Acid reflux, heartburn and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) are different names for the same thing -- the upward splashing of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, the long tube that brings food from the throat to the stomach. The esophagus can’t handle those corrosive juices, and the result is burning pain. Can you identify any food or drink that brings on your symptoms? If you can, eliminate it. Potential troublemakers are fatty foods, fried foods, spearmint, peppermint, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruit and caffeine. You prevent nighttime heartburn by putting 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed. In that position, gravity keeps stomach acid in the stomach. Weight reduction almost always lessens symptoms. I like your doctor’s approach. Use the cheapest medicine that keeps you free of pain. Antacids often can fit the bill: Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, Maalox and the many others. The most effective medicines are those called proton pump inhibitors: Dexilant, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix and AcipHex, some of which are available without a prescription. They practically turn off acid production. Some doctors like to have their patients stop use after a year to see if symptoms remit. If they do, so much the better. Less expensive are Tagamet, Pepcid, Zantac and Axid, which cut back on acid production
Best Heartburn Medicine? Cheapest One That WorksBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
and are obtainable without prescription. One downside of indefinite use of proton pump inhibitors is the possibility of vitamin B-12 deficiency. Acid is needed to absorb it. The same goes for iron, calcium and magnesium. The booklet on heartburn (GERD) explains this common condition in great detail, along with its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.Dear Dr. Donohue: My wife is a healthy 66-year-old woman. The problem is that she wakes up at night, screams for a second and then goes back to sleep. The following day, sometimes she remembers, but sometimes not. This has been going on for two to three years. She uses no medicines. What could this be? -- J.V.
Answer: It could be what’s called sleep terror. It’s more often seen in childhood, but occasionally adults have it. You describe it perfectly. The person suddenly wakens and screams in what appears to be panic. Then she or he returns to sleep. Most have no memory of the event the following day, and don’t recall a frightening dream. If this doesn’t interfere with her normal functioning, she doesn’t need to pursue it.Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. 5 SIMPLE STEPS TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS1. Write down your goals. We hear about people setting goals all the time but how many of us have written goals. Most people talk about goals or the things they want to accomplish but few people actually write them down. By writing our goals down gives us more clarity and a stronger sense of commitment. “If it’s worth doing it’s worth writing down”.2. Make your goals believable and measurable. Goals should not be feelings or impossible thoughts or wants, but something we can measure and quantify. Knowing we can achieve our goals through some discipline, consistency, and hard work. Our goals should stretch us but not be in the realm of impossibility. Also if you cannot measure or quantify your goal there is no real way of knowing when you accomplish your goal(s).3. Goals should have completion dates. If there are no completion dates attached to our goals there is a tendency to procrastinate and push our goals into
the future. Isn’t it true that when someone gives us a deadline we tend to accomplish more? Put a completion date on each of your goals to minimize procrastination and assure greater success.4. Speak and write as if your goals have already been accomplished. Avoid words and phrases like: I will; I want; I try. These phrases and words create loopholes and do not force us to commit. We don’t want to will, want, or try….we DO! We speak and write as if there is no way we cannot succeed. Ask any athlete how they think before going into competition; they are always confident and committed to their success. 5. Finally, read your goals daily (visual), say your goals out loud daily (auditory), and rewrite your goals weekly (kinesthetic). These tasks help solidify your goals by engaging all of your senses. This is a very important step in helping with your success. Goals should not be overly wordy, but should be sharp, tight, and to the point. Make 2013 a great year for yourself by creating a roadmap for success….well written and stated GOALS! Have a great New Year from everyone at TRIAD Health & Fitness!!!

Often times we think summer when we hear “Parks and Recreation”, but in reality, “Parks and Recreation” is a yearlong operation. Farmington Hills Special Services is “Parks and Recreation” and beyond for the Cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills.
The City of Farmington Hills has over 628 acres of open space specifically designated as public use parks. Most parks are open 365 days a year from 8 am – dusk. Winter is a great time to seek out some of the amenities Farmington Hills Special Services offers and an excellent time to discover one of the many programs and event opportunities.
As winter rolls in, so do the New Year’s resolutions. We often choose the resolution of “getting in better shape”. When we choose “to get in shape”, we think - eating healthier and
exercising more regularly. Well, how about this year, don’t dread the resolution! Exercise doesn’t mean going to the gym, starving yourself and waking up an hour early everyday. You can actually enjoy it! This year, how about trying something new to fulfill your “get in shape” resolution:
• Walk outdoors on a path or down the sidewalk during your lunch or after work. Just because it is winter, doesn’t mean you can’t go outside. Winter and snow often provides us a sense of peace and serenity – which is healthy, often reducing stress. The Farmington Hills Nature Center in Heritage Park is a perfect place to visit this winter, as just outsides its doors are 4.5 miles of trails
• If you are an indoor person, we offer a variety of fitness classes that many people call fun! Try Zumba, Yoga, or Cardio Boxing at Costick or Jon Grant Center
• If you are missing the swims in the lake, go open swim at the Costick Center Pool
• Want to get the family out for exercise? Open skate at Farmington Hills Ice Arena.
Getting in shape isn’t all about physical fitness, it is about balance. This winter, Farmington Hills Special Services, in partnership with several community organizations are developing a tool for Farmington and Farmington Hills residents that will help you “get in shape”. Stay tuned for www.F2HFIT.com.
For more information about winter programs and events call Farmington Hills Special Services 248-473-1800.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) Shutting people out to avoid distractions, even under a deadline, can cause hurt feelings. Instead, return calls and emails, and explain why you need a zone of privacy for now.TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) Although your keen Bull’s eyes usually can discern what’s fact from what’s faux, that upcoming decision will need really solid data before you can risk a commitment.GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) As your confidence grows, you should be able to work toward your goals with more enthusiasm. Open your mind to suggestions. Some of them might even work for you.CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Reconnecting with someone from your past stirs up that old sense
of adventure. But before you do anything else, be sure to get answers to those still-lingering questions.LEO (July 23 - August 22) Some people might resent the way you plan to resolve a difficult situation. But your commitment to making tough but fair decisions soon wins you their respect and support.VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) Mixed signals could be causing that vexing workplace problem. Before you choose to leave the project, ask for a meeting so you can get things out in the open.LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) Your good intentions could backfire if you’re not careful with other people’s feelings. Try using persuasion, not pressure, to get others to see your side of the situation.SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Your dedication to finishing the task at hand is laudable. But be careful not to overdo the midnight oil bit. Take time for relaxation with someone very special.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22-December 21) Although your intuition will help you make some tough choices in the first half of the month, you’ll need more facts to back up your actions later on.CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) All that hard work and research in the workplace finally pays off as you hoped it would. Ignore comments from jealous types who are out to get the Goat riled up.AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) An unfair decision creates unnecessary problems. But avoid anger and move carefully as you work this out. Expect to get support from an unlikely source.PISCES (February 19 - March 20) A fuzzy financial vista persists until midmonth, when things begin to clear up. You’ll also gain a better perspective on how to handle those pesky personal problems.BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful way of being there for those who need your help in difficult times.

Resolve to Live a Less Serious Life
I'll share with you what my biggest New Year's resolution is going to be. I resolve to become less serious this year.To this end, I'm going to:--Turn off the television completely at least one day a week. The news is rarely good, and the commercials are increasingly about drugs for serious diseases. If I need to know what the weather will be like tomorrow or the next day, the Weather Channel will let me know without also filling my head with
all the more serious news of the day.--Read humorous authors. To name a few, Rita M. Brown, Fanny Flagg and Garrison Keillor come to mind. The librarian will be able to suggest others, I'm sure.--Revisit the books of my childhood and see if I still love them. "The Boxcar Children," a few Nancy Drew mysteries and "Huckleberry Finn" are on my list.--Subscribe online to a joke a day. They'll come by email, and they're promised to be suitable for everyone. I'll even take a few elephant jokes. (Remember those?)--Order pizza (or something similar) delivered to my house once a month. No, it's not on my diet, but that's the point. On that day I won't cook or do dishes after dinner.--Revive my stamp collection. No, I won't spend a lot of money on it, but there are a few stamps that could fill in some blanks on the pages. It'll be relaxing to flip through the pages, attend the monthly stamp and coin show, and talk to people who are in love with stamps.

Q: IS CREDIT REPAIR LEGAL?
-- Jerry A., Livonia, MI
A: The sad reality is that some people and companies tout so-called “credit repair tactics” that are, in fact, illegal. Some companies sell information and services that are dishonest, unethical, outdated and illegal. For example, some companies promote or sell what is known as “CPN Numbers”, which is basically a fake social security number or tax payer id number.CPN Numbers are illegal, and should NOT be considered a part of legitimate credit repair.Another common so-called “tactic”:“Just dispute all the negative information on your report as ‘not mine’.”Disputing everything on your report as “not yours” when it is indeed yours is dishonest, unethical, and probably illegal. In our opinion, it’s fraud. There are enough ways to honestly go about the credit repair process without resorting to lying. . If you act with knowledge, honesty and integrity, then credit repair is most definitely legal. For more information on how you an legally repair and improve your credit call 248-569-9120 and ask for me.

Q: What is a Liquidation Bankruptcy?--Janice K., Redford, MI
A: Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a liquidation bankruptcy. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a straight wipe out of all of your debt, with a few exclusions thrown in. Chapter 7 bankruptcies may be filed by an individual, a husband
and wife together or separately, as well as corporations looking to stop operations completely. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy is the most commonly filed form of bankruptcy, as well as the quickest way to get a “fresh start.”

Are Tours Best?Q: What types of tours are popular today?A: People assume all tours use motor coaches, but many use a combination of travel modes, from railroad to boat. Specialized tours, such as culinary or religious tours are increasingly popular.
Q: Do any tours make it possible for travelers to be independent, or to customize a trip?A: Many do. On some, you spend a half day with the group and explore on your own the rest of the day. Another example dine-around programs in Italy. You get a list of recommended restaurants at each stop and decide where to eat on your own.
Q: What are the benefits of going on a tour?A: Tour guides are helpful in hard to navigate countries--especially where English isn’t spoken. Also, guides have insider access--such as being able to put your group in a priority line at the Louvre, so your wait is minimal.

Ask YourOil Change expert
Dave Garr
While both synthetic and conventional oils are good choices, synthetic oil holds a slight advantage. Synthetic motor oils can provide exceptional performance and protection, but they don’t eliminate the need for regular oil changes. High quality synthetic motor oils can perform and protect better than conventional motor oils, but engines running on gasoline or diesel will continue to naturally contaminate and stress the oil, and the additives can only work for so long. So if you are looking for the best oil for your car go with synthetic oil but first make sure to reference your owner’s manual.
What’s better? Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil?

Do I Need Health Insurance?Q: Why does my auto insurance care if I have health insurance? -- Gary M., Southfield, MI
A: Your auto insurance in Michigan comes with the benefit of unlimited medical coverage in the event of an injury due to an auto accident. Lower rates are available if you have appropriate health insurance coverage that coordinates your auto insurance with your health insurance. Medicaid, Medicare or a Medicare supplemental policy will not cover auto-related injuries, so primary medical needs to be purchased on the auto policy. If you have health insurance that coordinates, they become the primary payer for any injuries resulting from an auto accident. Your auto insurance would then pay for expenses not covered by the health policy. If you have health insurance, check with the company to make sure your health insurance coverage will pay for injuries related to a car accident.

Question: Does landlord get tenant’s approval before doing any maintenance work?
--Benjamin T., Lathrup Village, MI
Answer: NOW, there are different types of maintenance
1. Regular maintenance of filters, rubber parts, etc, consumables that are replaced in the regular course of time2. Requested maintenance within tenants rented space, eg, broken fixtures or other problems3. Emergency maintenance, like broken water lines or electrical problems (and even fires and floods)The regular maintenance is usually scheduled in advance, and 24 hours is the standard MINIMUM. the requested maintenance is the same. The emergency stuff, however, can never be scheduled and should be written in every lease a clause or statement allowing management 24/7 access to the unit in the event of fire, flood, or any other emergency deemed necessary by the management. Don’t leave it open to interpretation, but remember the tenant is entitled to full respect so don’t do maintenance without proper notice unless absolutely necessary.

Showing Your HomeDear Robert : What should I do during showings of my home? --Donna M., Commerce, MI
Answer: When your home is listed for sale, getting the call that an agent would like to show it can cause ambivalence. You’re excited someone is coming to look at the house, but now you have to get it SHOW READY! Moving experts have told us that if each member of the family has a “job” when the house is being shown, the process of getting the house ready works better for all. Some tips we give our sellers include:• The buyer’s first impression comes from the lawn and exterior• Keep garage closed; clean all pet debris; clean windows, doors, porches• Open all blinds and window treatments for natural light• Eliminate clutter; organize, straighten, rearrange• Clean baths and kitchen; fresh towels, tidy• Make all beds; thin out closets• Neutralize; gentle sounds and fresh baked cookies• Dehumidify the basement• Crate or pen petsNow…our very best advice about what to do during the showings…LEAVE! If you absolutely cannot leave the house, then go for a walk, go outside, but let the agent do his/her job and show your home in the best light! It’s just best to give them the opportunity to see the house without anyone present. We’d be happy to meet with you personally to answer
all your questions! If you’re thinking about selling your property, Century 21 Curran & Christie would
like to apply for the job!Call us at 248-264-1700 or 1-800-621-2021

What about the springs? By all means spray some oil on the springs, just remember that in the event of an over spray never get your hands on or near the springs. Take a broom and wrap a rag around
it then wipe off the excess.

▶ “Save egg cartons for children’s painting palettes. It’s very easy to give kids a small amount of many colors, and when they are each in their own cup, they don’t get spread out and run together as quickly. Plus, they are easy to carry.”-- O.L. in Utah
▶ Remove price-tag residue off hard surfaces with hairspray. Or WD40 works well too.
▶ Make your own frozen dinners by purchasing divided trays and using them to store leftovers. Slip each into a plastic bag and label. On busy nights, you can take your favorite out and microwave it.
▶ “A beautiful but stained or worn tablecloth can find a new life at your dinner table. Cut into napkin sizes, and give any frayable ends a hemming.” -- A.S. in Oregon
▶ Here’s a great winter tip that’s double purpose: After your dishwasher has done its job, open the door and let the dishes air dry rather than machine dry. You’ll save on energy, while you add warmth and humidity to your home’s air.
▶ A damp cloth plus baking soda should by your first weapon against stains in the kitchen and bathroom. It’s eco-friendly and a mild abrasive, which works without scratching!
