PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Hi & Welcome to 2019! If it seems like the year flew by—it did!
Our Show at the Armory in June 2018 was more successful than our Annual Auction in Sept.
‘18 was also a great time for CFOS. The Dec. Christmas party was ‘delicious’.
For ‘19 we are planning more events and benefits to our devoted membership.
Cold weather is still nearby for winter. Keep your plants inspected for mites, mealy bugs and scale—they all tend to like our dryer, less hu-mid season. Prepare blooms to open soon for spring by staking & preparing plants.
Thanks for all of your interest in your local society last year. We ap-preciate your membership.
If you are able to make a donation of time, plants or money to help us this year—thanks. As a new year begins , gratitude to our volunteers, board and members for a prosperous 2019.

Tips & TidbitsTips & TidbitsTips & TidbitsTips & Tidbits
When watering in the cold weather, our public tap water is about 60
deg. Try to water after the sun has warmed your greenhouse or
‘space’. I water the floor first and if the orchids need it, then I water
them.
Air circulation is a must with an enclosed space. It helps keep insects
from decimating your orchids. My fans run all the time even when I
have to turn on the heat. This is the first time I’ve used a propane
heater and it did very well in my new 14x20 greenhouse and kept it at
about 60 deg. for my warm growers. In the old 8x10 I used an electric
heater that had a thermostat setting that heated if it got to 45 deg. I
have my cooler growers in it.
Fertilizing: I’ve started with a growth fertilizer and put some Epsom
Salts in the water now that we are seeing the sun.
Cut off old yellow leaves or old bloom stalks and don’t forget to run
your cutting utensils through a flame to kill any harmful bacteria.
If you have Nobile Dendrobiums, trim off the yellow leaves and if they
haven’t fallen off already. It is really hard for me NOT to water the
plants until all of the old leaves have fallen. If you don’t remember to
hold the water, you will have plantlets instead of blooms. Time will tell
with mine as they mostly stay outside with my cymbidiums and they
get what mother nature gives them.
I look forward to your tips and successes to share with our Society!!
HAPPY GROWING! Alida

INTEREST GROUPS
Cultural Study Teri Sco(
Established in 1948, the Central Florida Orchid Society
(CFOS) is one of the oldest organiza0ons of its type in the
United States. Our members are mostly from Orange, Osceo-
la, Seminole and Volusia coun0es, but we also have ac0ve
members throughout Central Florida. Our members come
from all walks of life and several na0onali0es. This diverse
group is made up of doctors, lawyers, housewives, re0red
couples as well as professional growers alike. We all have
the common bond of our love and enjoyment of the beau0-
ful plants called orchids!
Whether you have one orchid or a thousand, there are many
benefits and rewards you can reap by becoming a member.
Upon joining CFOS, you will begin to receive our monthly
newsle.er, which will keep you informed of “study group”
ac0vi0es as well as upcoming CFOS events. you will also re-
ceive “early announcements” of special public sales held by
our member growers.
The monthly general mee0ngs are a 0me when all the mem-
bers have a chance to get together and share orchid growing
experiences. The General Mee0ngs are held on the second
Monday evening of the month at 7:00 PM at the Leu Botani-
cal Gardens. The monthly programs are presented by local,
na0onal and world-renown speakers and cover a wide vari-
ety of orchid topics. Books and videos may also be checked
our from the CFOS, well stocked library.
Every summer CFOS hosts an extravagant orchid show and in
the fall we hold a large orchid auc0on. This gives members a
great opportunity to purchase beau0ful plants at bargain
prices. Proceeds from the Annual Fall Auc0on benefit the
CFOS Scholarships and other interests.
There is one other acIve study group within CFOS:
• Cultural Study Group: For those members interested in
learning about the care and culture of various genera,
the Cultural Study Group meets the st Thursday of the
month at 7:00 PM at the Leu Botanical Gardens.
Mee0ngs stress the basics of orchid growing, and
maintenance. Members are urged to bring their
“problem plants” in for discussion. This group is also
very ac0ve at area shows and may take occasional field
trips.
