Trickortreat?...definitelytreat!Herearethe“pithy”,asElizabethZimmermanwouldcallthem,directionsforthisquickandeasybag.ThebatmotifisbasedononebyBarbaraWalker,butithasbeenmodifiedtosuitmyson’sspecificationsandtoaccommodatethebulkyyarnthatIchoseforthispattern.Thisbagisworkedfromthebottomup.Tobegin,youwillworkthebaseofthebagflatingarterstitch.Oncethebaseiscomplete,stitchesarepickedupalongthethreeremainingsidesofthepieceandtheremainderofthebagisworkedintheround.Thehandleisworkedfrombothsetsofthe6sidestitchesthatmakeupthesidesofthebag(directlyfromtheupperedge),andiscompletedwithathree‐needlebindoff.

Usingdpnsandthewoolthatistrailingfromthelaststitchworked,beginknittingthefirsthalfofthehandlebackandforthingarterstitch(youwillbeginthefirstrowwiththeinsideofthehandlefacingyou).Kniteveryrowuntilthehandlemeasures8‐10”.Iknowthatthisseemslikeaveryshorthandle,butitisjustonehalfofthetotallengthanditwillstretchasitisused.Ifyoudecidethatyouwouldliketoreinforcethehandlewithtwilltapeorribbon,youcangoaheadandmakethehandleonehalfthefinishedlengththatyoudesire.

Donotbindoffthesests.Cuttheyarnleavingatailforweavinginlaterandleavethesestsonthedpnforlater.

Turnbagtoworktheothersetofsidestitchestoworkthesecondhalfofthehandle.Withdpnsandtheinsideofthebagfacing,joinyarnandworkthesecondhalfofthehandleasyoudidthefirst.Stopknittingoncethetwohalvesarethesamelength,butdonotcuttheyarn.Turnthebaginsideoutandarrangethehandlehalveswithrightsidestogether.Holdthedpnsparalleltooneanotherwithrightsidesofworktogether,andusingtheyarntrailingfromthelaststitchworked,jointhehalvesofthehandletogetherwithathree‐needlebindoff.Cutyarnandfastenoff.

Linethebagifdesired.It’scuteeitherway,butIlikethewaytheliningshowsoffthemotif.Imadeasimpleliningformineandthenmadeafabricsleeveforapieceofcardboard,whichIinsertedintothebottomofthebagsothatitwouldhavearigidbase.Thisiscompletelyoptional,ofcourse.
