TENSIONTo ensure your knitting has the same measurements as the pattern, its a good idea to make a tension swatch before you start your project. A tension swatch is a small sample of your knitting where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the tension given in the pattern. (If you get MORE stitches/rows than the patterns tension, it means your knitting is tighter. If you get FEWER, it means your knitting is looser.)

    Stocking stitch:10 cm/4 = 16 stitches 10 cm/4 = 22 rows

    HOW TO KNIT YOUR HEMINGWAY

1 With Woolly Bully Alpaca, cast on 74 stitches.

2 Knit the 1st stitch, then work in 2x2 rib stitch until 1 stitch remains. Knit the last stitch.

3 Purl the 1st stitch, work in 2x2 rib stitch until 1 stitch remains, purl this stitch.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until your hat measures 25 cm/10 from the cast on edge (approx. 55 rows). Your last row should be step 3.

5 Now start shaping the top of the hat: knit the 1st stitch, knit 2 stitches together, purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches. Repeat the section inside the little stars another 8 times, knit the last stitch.

6 From now on, always work the section inside the stars a total of 9 times. Purl the first stitch, knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches, purl 1 stitch. Purl the last stitch.

7 Decrease row: knit the 1st stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, purl 2 stitches. Knit the last stitch.

8 Purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches, purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches, purl 1 stitch. Purl the last stitch.

9 Decrease row: knit the 1st stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches. Knit the last stitch.

10 Purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches, purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch. Purl the last stitch.

11 Decrease row: knit the 1st stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches together. Knit the last stitch.

12 Purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch. Purl the last stitch. (38 sts left.)

13 Cut the yarn, leaving a 40 cm/15 tail. Thread your knitters sewing needle with this tail, and pass it through all your stitches, then remove the knitting needle. Gently pull on the yarn until the top of the hat closes up.

    ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING

1 With your knitters sewing needle and a long strand of yarn, sew the side edges together using the invisible vertical seam technique.

TENSION SQUARETo ensure your knitting has the samemeasurements as the pattern, you need to knita tension square before you start knitting your project. A tension square is a small sample of your knitting where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the measurement (cm/in) given. If your tension sample does not match the tension square measurements, then you should try to knit either tighter or looser depending on whether your sample was too big or too small.

HOW TO KNIT YOUR FIT KNITS BAGYou will knit the fitnits bag using 2 strands of cotton at the same time.1 Cast on 45 stitches with 2 strands of cotton.2 Knit 72 rows in stocking stitch.3 Now you will create a hole for the bag strap:Slip the 1st stitch, knit 1 stitch, cast off 2 stitches only, knit to the end of the row.4 Slip the 1st stitch, purl 40 stitches, cast on 2 stitches and purl the last 2 stitches.5 Knit 10 rows in stocking stitch.6 Repeat steps 3 and 4 once.7 Knit 72 rows in stocking stitch.8 Cast off and weave in the loose ends.

THE STRAPS1 Cast on 3 stitches with 1 strand of cotton.2 Knit 400 rows in stocking stitch.3 Cast off and weave in the loose ends.

ASSEMBLING AND FINISHING1 Fold the top edge of the bag for 2.5cm (1.2'') and sew to secure, this will form the drawstring of the bag.2 With the knitters sewing needle and a long strand of yarn, use the vertical invisible seam technique to sew the seams of the bag together. Be careful, to leave the top corner of the seam open on the same side as the hole for the bag strap.3 Weave the knitted cord through the folded edge that you have created. Next insert the knitted cord through the small hole and tie with a knot to secure to the desired length

THE STITCHESAll of the knitting techniques are made using the Basic Stitches on the back of the pattern.-Garter stitchKnit every row.-Increasing stitchesYou can increase the width of your knitting by making extra stitches on your needle (see basic stitches).-Decreasing stitchesInstead of knitting only one stitch at a time, knit two stitches together. Insert the front of your right needle through the two first stitches of the left needle then knit them together as a single stitch.

TENSION To ensure your knitting has the same measurements as the pattern, it is a good idea to make a tension swatch before you start knitting your project. A tension swatch is a small sample of your knitting where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the measurements (cm/in) given in the pattern. If you get MORE stitches/rows than the patterns tension, it means your knitting is tighter. If you get FEWER stitches/rows than the pattern, your knitting is looser. Sometimes, it works to knit tighter or looser to compensate.

When you make your swatch, make sure it is large enough for you to measure 10 cm/4 without including the stitches/rows closest to the edges (as these often have a slightly different tension). When youre done swatching, simply unravel and re-use the yarn to start knitting your Katknits Hat.

    10 cm/4 = 9 stitches 10 cm/4 = 11 rows

HOW TO KNIT YOUR KATKNITS HAT

    1 Cast on 42 stitches.

2 Work in stocking stitch for 28 rows. (Or until your piece measures 25cm from the cast on edge.)

    3 Cast off.

ASSEMBLY AND FINISHINGSEWING UP YOUR PROJECT

1 Fold your knitted piece in half (with the right side facing out) so that the two short sides meet - sew these up using the invisible vertical seam technique. Next, sew the top of the hat (the cast off edge) using the invisible horizontal seam technique.

    2 Weave in the ends.

  • BASIC STITCHESSLIP KNOT

1Hold the yarn in your left hand approximately

    40cm (15.9) from the end.

    2Make a loop as shown.

3Slip the loop on to a needle and pull it tight.

weave the 40cm (15.9) tail into the knitting.

STARTING A NEW BALL OF YARN / CHANGING COLOURWhen you come to the end of your ball of yarn, finish the row but leave a tail of at least 30cm (11.8). With the new ball tie a loose knot on to the tail and slide it up to the needle.

Tighten the knot. Continue knitting with the new ball of yarn.

you will weave in the tails.

CABLE CAST ONThere are several ways to cast on. We like the method given here as it gives a neat finish to the edge of your work.

1Make a slip knot on a needle. Holding the needle and the tail in your left hand take

the right hand needle and insert it through the slipknot (stitch) so the left needle

is crossed over the right needle. Using your right hand, wrap the long end of

the yarn behind the needles and bring it around and between the needles.

2Bring the tip of the right hand needle under the left hand needle and catch the loop on

    the left needle.

3Hold the needles side by side.

4Insert the tip of the left needle up the stitch

on the right needle and release the right needle. You now have two stitches on the left needle.

5 Insert the needle between the two stitches,

wrap yarn around the right needle and bring through. Transfer the new stitch back onto

the left hand needle. Repeat step 5 until you have the correct number of stitches cast on.

KNIT STITCHThis is the basic knitting stitch. By knitting every row you will create what is known as garter stitch which has the same appearance on both sides.

1Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand

and the empty needle and ball end of the yarn in your right hand. Insert the tip of the right

With your right hand wrap the yarn from the ball behind the needles and then between

    the two needles.

2Bring the tip of the right needle under the left

    needle and catch the loop.

    3

and on to the right needle. Repeat steps 1 to 3 until all of the stitches

the needle back into your left hand and repeat row after row.

PURL STITCHWhen you knit the yarn is at the back of your work but when you purl, the yarn is at the front.

1Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand. Insert the

    be crossed right over left.

2With your right hand pull the yarn to the front

of your work then wrap the yarn around the right needle and between the needles back to the front

    of the needles.

3Bring the tip of the right needle under the left needle and catch the loop on the way through

    to the back.

    4

and on to the right needle. Repeat steps 1 to 4 until all of the stitches are on the right

your left hand and repeat row after row.

    CAST OFF

    1

and over the second stitch and the tip of the right needle. Now you will have only one stitch on

your right needle. Knit one more stitch so you have two stitches on

stitch left on the needle, remove needle.

2Cut the yarn leaving a 40cm (15.9) tail and pass the cut end of the yarn back through the loop of

the last stitch, pull the yarn tight.

WEAVING IN ENDS Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting to finish it off and stop it from unravelling.

Weave the yarn along the edge of your knitting as shown in the diagram.

Where you have started a new ball, weave one end in one direction and the other end

in the opposite direction. Once you have weaved in approximately

15cm (5.9) then cut the end.

INCREASINGTo increase the width of your knitting you can

increase by making extra stitches on your needle. Knit one stitch. Hold your needles apart and you

will see a loop of yarn from the row below between the needles.

1Using the left needle pick up the loop of yarn.

2Using the right needle knit the loop you picked up as if it were a stitch. Now you will have one extra

the yarn will be tight when you knit the extra stitch this is how it should be). If you are increasing on

a purl row it is done the same way.
