GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”
Hello Everyone, What a beautiful day; nice weather for riding. For those who did not attend Wings Over the Smokies, you missed lots of fun, renewing
friendships and making new friends. The weather was absolutely beautiful each day but a little cooler on Sunday for riding home. Chapter A had 24 members that attended and volunteered to work…THANK YOU for selling the Grand 50/50 and motorcycle tickets and most of all, working double, triple shifts and filling in where needed. You did a great job!
The District Team did an excellent job this year. They had a well planned program that kept everyone busy. There was a chocolate pie eating con-test with 10 participants and the lucky winner was Vickie Butcher, Chapter G-High Point. The Fashion Show was something else … we had Abe Lincoln, an Indian Chief and his Squaw, a dance hall gal (Alyce
Quinn, Chapter M-Salisbury), a farmer and his faithful and loyal cow and many, many more.
The motorcycle winner was Alice Manning, Chapter D-Greenville - LUCKY, LUCKY. The Hartco Seat winner was from Chapter F2-Garner and the winner of the $2400 voucher for a CSC trailer was none other than Carl Allen, Chapter A-Greensboro. The grand 50/50 drawing, 10%, was won by, guess who, Mr. Ron. Somehow the winnings ended up in my hand! For all the workers, the District had a drawing for those that worked and they received an envelope—you will have to ask them what was in it? Chapter A had about 11 winners. For those that are going to the beach in November, hopefully you have called and con-
firmed your reservations. If not their telephone number is 800-448-1091, Holiday Sands North. Get out and ride and enjoy these nice days and the coming leaf season. We talked with someone from Boone and he said in about 15 days would be a great time to ride the mountains and see the beautiful fall colors. See you at our October Gathering, Ride Safe, We care, Alice & Ron Myers

As I write this, we’re about to head for Wings Over the Smokies! The weather is going to be wonder-ful, and the leaves are turning in the mountains, so the scenery will be brilliant and colorful! What a wonderful time of year to be riding with friends.
Riding in the mountains will be wonderful, temps are a little cooler there, and the bikes handle the curves so well. It re-freshes the spirit and reminds us why we love motorcycling with our friends. Can’t wait!
Many of us will get together with friends, Chapter members, maybe even some new folks, to ride to WOTS and then back home again. In that case, you are engaging in group riding, and there are some hints that will make the ride safer and more enjoyable. It’s always wise to have a pre-ride discussion. You should cover expected speeds, road conditions, total duration, stopping frequency, and reminders of riding formation (staggered, and please explain staggered as some riders are not familiar with it), maintaining your position in the group without interfering with other riders. Every rider should be alert, be prepared to communicate potential hazards to the group, and be prepared to deal with other traffic potentially merging into the group.
Please be very alert when riding, solo or group. We’re entering the rut season, when Bambi goes crazy, and probably the elk, too. Watch for movement on the sides of the roads, these furry critters can dart out unexpectedly, sometimes in groups. For your safety, SLOW DOWN, be prepared to stop, if necessary. Emergency braking is an essential skill, which you should be practicing on a regular basis, at varying speeds and on different surface conditions. This month’s issue (Oct. 2017) of Motorcycle Consumer News
has a very good article, “Emergency Braking: It’s Worth the Time to Practice”, which gives detailed information to help you improve your braking skills. Many of our motorcycles are equipped with anti-lock brakes, which are a major help in stopping quickly and safely, but you still need to practice – proper braking needs to become second nature.
After the leaves change color in the Fall, they DROP – and it’s already starting (you should see the carpet of leaves on my back yard)! Just a reminder, we’ve talked about grass clip-pings being thrown out on the road when yards are being mowed, and what problems this can potentially cause motorcycles. Leaves on pavement can be even worse, hiding debris or road surface problems, and those leaves, when wet, can be as slick as ice – definitely a
problem to be aware of and avoid!
We’ll have fun at Wings Over The Smokies, we’ll see a lot of friends, old and new, have some good times and great rid-ing, make wonderful memories, and – maybe, maybe -- win a new bike or other prizes! Look forward to seeing you there, and look forward to seeing you at our next Chapter gathering.
We make Safety a priority, truly we are Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, and we’re out to make more friends!

Bill and Janice continue to travel to the various Central Region Chapter Gath-erings. We attended our NC District Rally in Waynesville and had lots of
fun. We even got to visit some of Bill's family while we were there.
Carl, Nancy, Dave, Helen, Bill and Janice went to Maggie Val-ley to tour the Wheels Thru Times museum. Well worth the time and money; if you have not been, put it on your bucket list.
We have captured the Couple's Plaque 3 out of 5 times for the month of September making a total of 22 captures for the year.
Congratulations to our Couple Friends, the Kennedys from NC-X Wake Forest for captur-ing the NC District Couple title. At the Meet and Greet for the NC Couples we received a nice gift from George and Brenda Harper our NC District Couple- a silver plate with the Logo on it.
Also congratulations to Carl Allen for winning the voucher for the trailer off the grand prize ticket. And don't forget the congratulations for Bruce Wing as he got a blue ribbon in the Mascot competition.
We enjoyed the parade into Waynesville, had lots of bikes in front of us as well as behind us.
Remember to attend our Chapter Gathering on the 12th as well as other Chapters. Be safe in your travels. Bill and Janice Buckner NC-A Chapter Couple 2017

Strawberry Pretzel Salad By Helen Wilson
9
2 cups crushed pretzels
3/4 cup butter, melted
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup white sugar
1 (8oz) package cream cheese
1 (8oz) container whipped topping
2 (3 oz) packages strawberry flavored Jell-O
2 cups boiling water
2 (10 oz) packages frozen strawberries
Peach Cobbler By Shirley Dye (adaptation from Paula Deen)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
For crust: Stir together crushed pretzels, melted butter and 3 TBS sugar; mix well and press mixture into bottom of 9x13 baking pan. Bake 8-10 minutes;
set aside to cool.
In a large mixing bowl cream together cream cheese and 1 C sugar. Fold in whipped topping. Spread mix-
ture onto cooled crust. Refrigerate till well chilled.
Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Cool slightly and stir in frozen strawberries and allow to set briefly. When mixture is about consistency of egg whites,
pour and spread over cream cheese layer.
Refrigerate until set (1 hour) and ready to serve.
Cut slices and serve with whipped topping.
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar (or Splenda for diabetics)
3/4 cup self-rising flour
3/4 cup milk
1 28-oz can sliced peaches, undrained
(no sugar added for diabetics)
Cinnamon for sprinkling
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Place butter in oven in a 2-quart baking dish to melt.
In a medium mixing bowl stir sugar and flour together and mix well. Slowly add milk and continue to stir to prevent the
batter from lumping.
Being careful not to burn yourself, remove hot baking dish containing melted butter from oven. Pour batter directly
over butter in baking dish (DO NOT STIR).
Spoon fruit on top of batter, then gently pour juice on top
(DO NOT STIR).
Sprinkle with cinnamon, if using.
The most important part of this dish is NOT STIRRING the mixture.
Bake for 30 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Batter will rise above and over your fruit, pro-
ducing the most wonderful of crusts.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream.

DO WE NEED TO GO ON A DIET?
After talking to an expert, and recognizing the signs and symptoms, I decided I
needed to go on a diet! This was such a great idea, why did I wait so long to make
this decision? The results were almost overnight. I was much happier and my body
loved it. It has already changed my entire perspective on several parts of life.
My Nutritionist also shared her favorite saying with me: “Move from Fatitde into Fititude!” That really
caused me to want to apply this philosophy to our Association. In GWRRA, we might use “Move
from Stagnitude to Changitude” – “Stagnitude” may not be in the dictionary, but it does describe
some of what has happened in our Organization through the years. Many times our attitude has been
“It has worked in the past, why change?” We have failed to respond to the changing times. We need
to find new ways to operate, improving our communications, streamlining our Officer Network and
concentrating on what originally brought us to GWRRA: the Fun and fellowship of likeminded motor-
cyclists who shared the desire to ride together in a safe manner.
The word “stagnant” means several things like: “showing little or no activity or vitality, slug-
gish, slow moving, lethargic and declining”. WOW, that might describe a few of our Chapters
around the country. The good news is: we can easily resolve stagnation. We need to increase
movement and add more clean air. Sounds like an easy solution especially for Chapters
around the country. This is not a permanent condition, when recognized and addressed soon
enough.
So, maybe we all need a new diet in GWRRA. Let’s do away with some of the many
rules and regulations. Let’s find ways to increase our riding and social calendars,
spend more time with each other, reduce the bureaucracy, improve the communi-
cations and eliminate some paperwork, making the Chapter Directors job more fun, less time consum-
ing and far more rewarding.
This new diet means we will want to know more about these new changes in GWRRA, understanding
the meaning and recognizing their many values. With less demanding structure and fewer rules, we
will all have time to really enjoy our fellow Members and enhance our GWRRA experience!
By the way, don’t be overly concerned with some of the changes with Rider Education. Over 50%
of all of our years (30+) in GWRRA, were to serve in Rider Education at Chapter, District and Re-
gion roles, so I am very passionate about this subject! Our District Educators will be able to fur-
nish and distribute lots of valuable information regarding how to ride safely and schedule all of our
education events like Rider Ed Days, Masters Celebrations, ARC and First Aid/CPR classes for our
Chapters.
Let’s embrace our changes in GWRRA and look forward to a fun-filled adventure with our 2, 3, or 4
wheeled friends in our Association.
