Greetings From Your Chapter Directors

Tom & Colleen FitzGerald

GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”

Happy New Year to our GWRRA family in Chapter A and the North Carolina District. 2017 was an eventful year with the changes that were made in the structure of GWRRA. I’m sure we’ll learn more about how the changes will impact our Chapter at the District Operations meeting on January 27, 2017.

I want to personally thank Alice and Ron Myers for the outstanding job they did as Chapter Direc-tors for our chapter for a total of 5 years in their two terms. They’re going to be a tough act to follow.

Our 2018 staff at this point consists of myself and Colleen as CDs, Helen Wilson as Treasurer, Al-ice Myers as Membership Enhancement Coordinator, Paula Hines as Ride Coordinator, Debbie Nadel as Sunshine and Care Bear coordinator, and our new couple of the year, Carl and Nancy Allen. We’ll be scheduling a staff meeting in January and a Chapter Planning session in February.

New Year’s always brings with it resolutions. My resolution as incoming Chapter Director is to ac-centuate the reason we all joined GWRRA in the first place - to enjoy riding our bikes with likeminded in-dividuals and enjoy the fellowship of our members. We’ll be trying to schedule at least one chapter ride per month. This could entail other Chapter functions, dinner rides, specialty rides like the Marine Corps Muse-um ride in 2016, and simply a member’s choice ride. If anyone has a special place or ride in mind, please forward the information to either me or Paula Hines.

I would be remiss in not looking back on the fine Christmas Party we had at the Fireman’s Club in Greensboro on Saturday, December 9, 2017. Thirty-one hearty souls attended on the first snowy weekend of the winter. The food was great, Melissa’s Christmas question activity was entertaining, and of course the “Dirty Santa” gift exchange was fun.

One of the greatest benefits of GWRRA is the Rider Education program. Colleen and I are both Grand Master Tour Riders, which means we’ve been Master Tour Riders for 10 consecutive years. The lev-els program is something all members should consider taking advantage of. Here’s a brief overview:

Level I Safety by Commitment

Level II Safety by Education

Level III Safety by Preparedness

Level IV Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness

We’ll be discussing the levels program more in the coming months. With there no longer being a dedicated Chapter Educator, Paula Hines and I will be assisting those who’d like to get involved with the levels program.

For those members needing to maintain their level 3 or 4 requirement for Medic First Aid certifica-tion, I’m hosting a Medic First Aid/CPR/AED class at my home on Saturday, February 10, 2018. The class is limited to 12 students and we already have 5 students signed up. Anyone interested in attending should email me with their name, GWRRA number, membership expiration date, and their Chapter affiliation.

Please join Colleen and me and the incoming officers and staff of the oldest NC chapter in making 2018 a fun and memorable year.

Tom FitzGerald, CD Don’t forget the NC OPS meeting 1-27-18 at Ramada Inn, Burlington NC. Start time will be 9am-lunch-and finish up around 4pm. Who to attend? Chapter Director, COY, MEC and Ride Educator-Coordinator.

Hope everyone had a Christmas to remember, and a wonderful start to the New Year. As we enter 2018, weather may not cooperate to allow us to ride for a while, although we do some-times get those “warm spells” that tease us into getting out for shorter rides. If that happens, be sure to call some GWRRA friends to ride with you. I believe we have two super moons

scheduled, one on January 2nd, if I recall correctly. A super moon is a spectacular sight, hope we have no cloud cover and can see it.

Meanwhile, we will have time for us to polish up the bikes, service them as needed, clean our riding gear and consider ourselves – we all can use some improvement in our riding knowledge, and keeping ourselves in good physical condition. I’m hitting the gym at the “Y” to build endurance and strength for riding when the weather cooperates.

We are still utilizing the Rider Education Levels Program, which can help us reduce the rate of accidents signif-icantly, and provides several benefits, including:

Increased rider knowledge Increased rider safety skills

Prevention of accidents Reduced injuries Reduced fatalities Improved general public image of motorcyclists

Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle riding.

Safety is for Life!

Level I – Safety by Commitment

Level I of the Rider Educations Levels Program represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to practice and encourage safe motorcycle operation whenever they operate their motorcycle. Enrollment is free.

Safety begins as a state of mind that can only be attained through total commitment. Every successful accom-plishment begins with a commitment to reach the intended objective. This is true of the Rider Education Lev-els Program and includes a promise to learn for the benefit of Rider, Co-Rider, friends and family, and others on the road.

There is no mileage requirement to enter Level I. The commitment to safe riding is indicated by the accumula-tion of accident free miles since joining GWRRA. Members are encouraged to display their commitment by wearing their Safe Mile achievements. Accident free miles are accumulated in 5,000 mile increments and usu-ally updated at yearly intervals.

Rider/Co-Rider Requirement: The requirement for Level I is current Membership and the expressed commit-ment of the Rider or Co-Rider to strive for and practice safe riding. They are encouraged to display these patches as an outward sign of that commitment.

Submit a completed Rider Education Program Levels Application (Form N-7) along with optional pin/patch fee to a GWRRA Operations Officer for verification.

In future articles, we’ll provide information on Levels II, III and IV.

Planning rides for our Chapter that will be interesting and enjoyable for all of us can include GWRRA activities such as rallies, but also NC activities such as festivals (such as Mule Days, Apple festival, etc.), and NC attrac-tions (such as museums, public gardens, historic tours, etc.). Several rides in North Carolina were featured in

the current issue of Wing World, and Our State Magazine provides information about inter-esting destinations. And, of course, there’s always great food to be found and interesting roads to ride.

Please help out by providing suggestions, and if you’d like to set up and lead a destination ride, let us know! I’d be glad of the help, and interested in your ride ideas!

Let’s ride in 2018 – with a commitment to safe and enjoyable riding!

Paula, Ride Coordinator

Our A gathering was opened by Chapter Director, Alice Myers, welcom-ing everyone. We discussed sicknesses and anyone who needed some spe-cial thoughts; then had a moment of silence. Our COY, Janice and Bill, spoke about how much they enjoyed representing A and are looking for-ward to new adventures and family events next year. Alice greeted guest chapters as follows: H2 Durham (2) and District (Libby) with N Burlington (3), Everyone welcomed 2 new members, Larry Weavil and Jane Wall.

NC-A captured the Region N Travelers Plaque and it will now be retired for 2016-17. The vest drawing winner was NC-A Colleen FitzGerald.

Paula Hines, Chapter Educator talked about being careful of the cold weather and black ice. She has been released from her knee doctor and therapy. Discussed for the upcoming year: Polar Bear Ride January 1 (bare foot skiing), continue promoting Levels program, 9 rides planned for next year, and appreciate suggestions for rides. Linda, Sunshine and Care Bear, recognized December birthdays, anniversaries and GWRRA anniversaries. Thanks go out to Henry Jinnette, Chapter Photogra-pher, for capturing moments of the monthly events and to several others who posted event pictures. Bruce Wing may win another award for attending so many meetings. Contact Dwain Strader if interested in the jackets he is giving away. He is planning another weekend ride and will keep us posted.

Ron & Alice thanked all their staff and everyone who helped with 50/50 sales, vest tickets, contributed Murdoch Center baskets for raffles and every-thing else. A special thank you was given to Pat as she is retiring as Treasurer after many, many years.

Tom presented a certificate of appreciation to Ron & Alice for their wisdom, patience

and leadership. He then presented his staff for 2018.

50/50s were won by John Dye (A) and Barbara Hands (A).

See you at the next gathering, January 11th.

Ride Safe.
