ThecapitalcampaignforEpiphany’snext100yearsisagratifyingsuccess.Everyoneofuswhoworkedonthatcampaignorrespond-edtoitsmessagecanlookforwardtotheexcitingimprovementsafootonthiscampus.Letusalsoremember,however,thatwhatmakesEpiphanyaplace,ahome,asanctuaryarenotonlythewallsandroof,thebricksandmortar,butwethepeople,thechurch.

IinviteeveryonewhowantsEpiphanytobeaplace,ahome,asanc-tuary,toofferthatuniquegiftoftime,skillsandenergyheorshealonecangivetothelifeofthisparish.Paidclergyandstaffbynomeanskeepthisplacehummingandlivelyallbythemselves.PleasestudythatyellowinsertintheSundaybulletins.Choosehowyoumightimprove,enlarge,renovate,repair,andmakebeautifultheworkofEpiphany,which,asItrytounderstandit,isinvitingsoulstoknowtheloveofGodanddemonstratingthatloveourselves.

AschairofEpiphany’sSocialActionCommittee,Iespeciallyinviteyoutoparticipateinparishministriesforthoseinneedbeyondourcampus.AsLindaMaxsonwrotehereintheDecember9issueoftheWeeklyWord,quotingBishopRickel,“Everythingwedoinhereissowecangooutthere.FromherewegoandserveChrist.”

IfaChristianisonewhofollowsChrist,thentheChristianmustfol-lowwhereChristleads.AndeverythingweknowaboutChristindi-catesheleadsusnottoanendofcomfortablepietybuttothosewhosuffer.

Radical.Revolutionary.That’showtheteachingsofJesusareoftendescribed.After2000years,Christianityhasbecomesoidenti iedwithWesternculturethatperhapsitishardtoappreciatehow la-grantlytheonce-newreligion launtedsocialconventionsoftheancientworld.ButlistentoaChristianintheyearssoonafterChrist:

 

Tertullian,anAfricanconvertinthesecondcenturyAD,writesthattheearlyChristianswereridiculed“becausewecalleachotherbrotherandsister…Whatmarksusintheeyesofourenemiesisourpracticeoflovingkindness.‘Onlylook,’theysay‘lookhowtheyloveoneanother!’”

Peopleintheancientworlddidn’tknowwhattomakeoftheseChristianswhovoluntarilycontributedtoacommonfundtosup-portorphans,whobroughtfoodandmedicinetoprisonersandforced-laborersinthewretchedmines,whoduggravesandburiedthepoorandcriminalswhowouldotherwiselieunburied,whohealedthesickwithoutchargingfees,whowelcomedallintotheirextendedfamilyofbrothersandsisters.*

CompassionatecareandlovingkindnessarebynomeansuniquetoChristianity.ButforChristians,becauseoftheexampleofChrist,lovingothersasourselvestrumpseverything.Suchloveisstilloneofthemarks,thegoodfruit,bywhichChristiansareknown.

WhenIwasanundergraduate,thegreatscholarofmythandreli-gionJosephCampbellcametospeakattheUniversityofArkansas.Idon’trememberexactlywhathesaidthatnight,butIrememberthis:Whileallowingthatheclearlyhadadeepappreciationandun-derstandingofotherreligions,hesaid“buttheHindusaren’ttheonespickingupdyingpeopleoffthestreetsinIndia,it’stheCatho-lics.”

Onceuponatime,ifyouweresick,homeless,hungry,orphaned,widowed,maimed,mentallyunbalanced—sufferedanyaf liction,thechurchwastheonlyrecourse.ThegreatreligiousordersofChristendomroseupinparttocareforthepoorandsufferingoftheirday.

Nowtheseneedsareoftenaddressedbythemanyexcellentnon-pro itsandnon-governmentagenciesthatdogoodandnecessaryworkthatgovernmentsandindividualscannot.

InrecentyearsEpiphanyhasgrownitssupportofseverallocalnonpro itswhoareourministrypartners:theYWCA,TeenFeed,OperationNightwatchand,mostrecently,WellspringFamilySer-vices.Theseagenciesalladdresshomelessnessanditsvariouscausesandconsequences,workthatinearliertimesmighthavefallenentirelyonchurcheslikeourparish.(Mygrandmothercouldremembergoingtoschoolinclothingoutofachurchbarrel.)

 

YouhelptheseorganizationshelppeoplewhenyouputmoneyinthehungerbasketonyourwaytocommuniononSundays;donateThanksgivingmealsandChristmasgiftsforfamilieslivinginYWCAhousing;spendaFridaynightinChristieHousewithourhomelessguestsfromOperationNightwatch;collectsuppliesforWellspring’sBabyBoutique;anddoanynumberofotherthingsthisparishdoestosupportpeopleinvariousdif iculties.

Butoftenthehelptheseorganizationsneedmostisdirect inancialsupport.ToprovidethatkindofhelpiswhyHaveaHeart,Epipha-ny’sannualdinnerparty,hasbecomeagiddyhighpointonthepar-ishcalendar,fallingthisyearonFebruary9.Theevening’shosts(theSocialActionCommitteewithlotsofhelp)inviteyoutohaveagoodmealandagoodtimegivingmoneyaway.

The creator of the Good Dog Carl series of popular children’s books will paint a headshot portrait of your child or pet. The artist will work from a photograph and determine whether the subject is best suited for pastels or watercolors.

This item will be sold to the highest bidder at Have a Heart on February 9. If you cannot attend this event, you may submit a sealed bid to the parish office by Friday, February 7. Minimum Bid: $750.

A little fine print: Subject must be one child or one pet; the illustration here is meant only as an example of the artist’s work. The artist herself will photograph the subject. The portrait will be slightly less than life sized, up to a maximum size of 12-in. x 18-in. The work must be completed by the end of 2014.

Cleaningsomeoneelse’shomemaynotsoundlikethemostfunwaytospendaSaturdaymorningbutinfactitis.Thereissomethingaboutcomingtogetherasacommunitytodoajobthatmakesalltheabovejobsseemmuchmoresatisfying.Itisoftentheexperi-enceofsimplystandingbackandtakingonelastlookbeforeweleave—thisapartmentisnowclean,decoratedandwaitingtobeahome.
