Biographies:Jim Alexander, Executive Vice President at Strawn Arnold & Associates, joinedthe company in 2016. He has 30 years of experience in the pharmaceuticaland consumer products business, including Pfizer and Warner-Lambert as VicePresident of Business Development and Licensing, Marketing, Regulatory, andMedical Affairs. During his 10-year leadership of the Rutgers Post-Doctoral Fel-lowship Program, Dr. Alexander trained over 400 PharmDs who currently workat all levels of the pharmaceutical industry. Jim also founded the Industry Phar-macists Organization. Recently, Jim was Senior VP and General Manager ofHME/myCME.com, a top tier and fastest growing CME website in the industry.Dr. Alexander earned his BS and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the Uni-versity of Nebraska.
Richard W. Johnson, Ph.D., is Global Regulatory Leader at Penn Color Inc.in Hatfield, PA, responsible for the regulatory compliance of Penn Color’swide range of colorants. Rich has served on the Vinyl Division Board of Di-rectors and Technical Committee, and has presented papers at ANTEC®,Vinyltec®, and to our Palisades Section.

MESSAGE FROM RUTGERS STUDENT CHAPTER PRESIDENT, MEREDITH TAGHON
The SPE Rutgers Student Chapter is happy to announce the SPEMarch meeting will be hosted this year in the new state-of-the-art facil-ity, the New Jersey Institute for Food, Health, and Nutrition (IFNH). Thisfacility represents the intersection between science, sport, nutrition andhealth to achieve maximal well-being and quality of life. IFNH housesseveral centers, including the Center for Health and Human Perform-ance as well as the Center for Childhood Nutrition Education and Re-search. However, the centerpiece of IFNH is its dining venue, Harvest.
Harvest is focused behind a vision of sustainability and environmentalresponsibility. All dishes are prepared from whole food ingredients. Our
menu for the March event will be personally developed by Harvest’s two classically-trained chefs, Chef Ian Keith and Chef RachelReuben, using culinary techniques to create delicious dishes free of the high levels of sugar, additives, and chemicals found inmany processed foods. Harvest works with local suppliers to source its whole foods and only offers meats and seafood fromhormone and antibiotic-free animals. In addition to its commitment to provide healthy and sustainable food, Harvest serves allof its meals using plant-based plates and cutlery. After each meal the plates, napkins, cups and cutlery are collected and com-pacted on site and the remains are then ready to biodegrade!
During the Question and Answer portion, students were par-ticularly interested in whether to choose industry versus grad-uate school and wondering what it was like to be a contributingmember at a company. SPE general body member Don Kimexplained, “It was a valuable experience being able to gain theperspective of a long-time industry member. Since I will begraduating soon, his views helped me sort out what I want todo post-graduation.” And SPE member and undergraduate re-searcher Ryan Szeto said, “Mark Lavach’s speech was capti-vating and informative. Although he had a professional aura, Iwouldn’t be surprised if he was a part time comedian.” Overall,it was a fun event and a great way to recruit the younger stu-dents to join SPE.
In March, we look forward to a “Make your Own Eraser” Gen-eral Body Meeting and the Palisades Meeting at Harvest. A lotof students are very interested in attending because it’s such aunique opportunity to be a part of a great community. And ofcourse, we are also looking forward to spring break!

We opened up our new semester in February with a talk from SPE’s Mark Lavach: “My Time in the Plastics Industry and Keys to aSuccessful Career.” Students really enjoyed learning about the evolution of the plastics industry—from a rapidly growing field in the1980s to a more established field focused on light-weighting and sustainability in the new millennium. Mr. Lavach expanded his dis-cussion to include observations of his career and how to be successful, including the importance of adaptability, always learning,and remembering that you should be having fun in your career.

I participated in a "Remote WinterCouncil Meeting" conducted on Fri-day, February 5, 2016. This was amorning meeting with a limitedagenda to cover issues and ongoingbusiness that Council did not want todelay until the May 21-22 meeting atANTEC®. The topics covered in-cluded a financial update for 2015, a
status report from the task force for governance reform, newPolicy/Bylaw changes, and conversion to electronic election ofCouncil officers.
The finance committee reported that the two factors signifi-cantly impacting our 2015 financial picture were a booked losson investment funds of over $200K by Foundation & SPEand about a $350K income loss as the result of the ANTEC®
exhibition being part of the NPE in 2015. The total operationalresults showed a loss of about $50K. On the positive side,publication costs are stable, advertising/sponsorship revenueis up about 30% over 2014, and the total bottom line resultsare expected to be about -$7K versus a break-even budget.An audit will be conducted in March before final results areavailable and a final report will be provided at ANTEC®.
A detailed PowerPoint presentation (available on the SPE web-site) was given on the results to date of the work by the Gov-ernance Task Force (GTF) on planned reform of governancethat would replace the current Executive Committee (EC) witha fully elected Governing Body (GB), accountable to Council,that would provide the necessary direction and oversight of So-ciety governance matters. The GTF will present specific actionsat the next Council Meeting for approval. It is the committee’shope that this change will be approved with changes to begincommencing in the 2017 fiscal year.
The plan to move to “Electronic Elections” for officers of TheSociety is finally moving forward, and councilors were advisedof the procedures to be used for the election process that willbegin in late February with our receipt of a nominationsbrochure of candidates. After which, additional nominationsfrom the floor will be open until March 20th. We will later beprovided with a secure website and detailed instructions for thevoting process that will begin on April 4, 2016 with the electionof President Elect (2017-2018).

Scholarships Available from SPE ACCETwo ACCE scholarships are for full-time graduate studentsanywhere in the world who are pursuing degrees in PolymerScience, Composites, Plastics or a related Engineering disci-pline. Additionally, the new Dr. Jackie Rehkopf scholarships areavailable to either full-time graduate or junior or senior under-graduate students anywhere in the world pursuing degrees inPolymer Science, Composites, Plastics or a related Engineeringdiscipline, with preference given to female students (althoughthe best candidates will be selected). In addition to a letter ofrecommendation from an advisor or mentor (and other SPEFoundation requirements), students must provide a succinct 2-page essay explaining how their planned work will benefit poly-mer composites usage in the automotive or otherground-transportation industry. Winning students are requiredto submit a formal paper on their research by June the followingyear and are expected to present their results in person at nextyear's SPE ACCE conference, September 6-8, 2017.
