first READINGActs 10:44-48 CEV

The Gentiles receive the Holy Spirit

R: The first Reading for The Sixth Sunday of Easter is written in Chapter 10 of Acts, beginning at Verse 44.

Acts 10:44-48 44While Peter was still speaking, the Holy

Spirit took control of everyone who was listening.

45Some Jewish followers of the Lord had come with Peter, and they were surprised that the Holy Spirit had been given to Gentiles.46Now they were hearing Gentiles speaking unknown languages and praising God.

Acts 10:44-48 Peter said, 47"These Gentiles have

been given the Holy Spirit, just as we have! I am certain that no one would dare stop us from baptizing them." 48Peter ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and they asked him to stay on for a few days.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 98 CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 98

1Sing a new song to the LORD! He has worked miracles, and with his own powerful arm, he has won the victory.

C: 2The LORD has shown the nations that he has the power to save and to bring justice.

Psalm 98 CEV R:3God has been faithful in his love for

Israel, and his saving power is seen everywhere on earth.

C: 4Tell everyone on this earth to sing happy songs in praise of the LORD.

Psalm 98 CEV R: 5Make music for him on harps. Play

beautiful melodies!   C :6Sound the trumpets and horns

and celebrate with joyful songs for our LORD and King!

Psalm 98 CEV R: 7Command the ocean to roar with all

of its creatures, and the earth to shout with all of its people.

C: 8Order the rivers to clap their hands, and all of the hills to sing together.

Psalm 98 CEV R: 9Let them worship the LORD! He is

coming to judge everyone on the earth, and he will be honest and fair.

C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen

SECOND READING1 John 5:1-6 CEV

Faith gives us victory over the world

R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 5 of First John, beginning at Verse 1.

1 John 5:1-6 If we believe that Jesus is truly Christ,

we are God's children. Everyone who loves the Father will

also love his children. 2If we love and obey God, we know that we will love his children. 3We show our love for God by obeying his commandments, and they are not hard to follow.

1 John 5:1-6 4Every child of God can defeat the

world, and our faith is what gives us this victory. 5No one can defeat the world without having faith in Jesus as the Son of God.

1 John 5:1-6 6Water and blood came out from the

side of Jesus Christ. It wasn't just water, but water and blood. The Spirit tells about this, because the Spirit is truthful.

This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSE

C: ♫ Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

gospelM: The Holy Gospel is written in

Chapter 15 of the Gospel according to St John, beginning at Verse 9

C: ♫ Glory to you, O Lord.

John 15:9-17 NRSVJesus calls us his friends

John 15:9-17 Jesus said:9As the Father has loved me, so I have

loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 1I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

John 15:9-17 12‘This is my commandment, that you

love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you.

John 15:9-17 15I do not call you servants any longer,

because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.

John 15:9-17 16You did not choose me but I chose

you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

We sing as our free will offering is received.

What a friend

LH 426 CAL 293Joseph Scriven (1820-1886)

What a friend

1. What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer.

What a friend

2. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer.

What a friend

3. Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Saviour, still our refuge! Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer; In His arms He’ll take and shield you, You will find a solace there.
