UK Census on April 2nd 1911
The results of searching 'UK Census on Line' in Norfolk and Suffolk for the occupation 'wherryman', plus Occupation Code 545 - 'bargeman', 'lighterman' 'waterman', as well as boatman and boat builder.
This includes searching 'wherry' as sometimes the occupation is listed as 'wherry man', etc. General This was the most detailed census up to that time. The questions asked were: Name, Age, Sex, Occupation, Address, Place of Birth, Relation to Head [of household], Marital Status, Employment Status, Nationality, Duration of current marriage, Number of children born, living, died. Where a son has followed his father as a wherryman or wherry builder, and both were at home on census night, I have made separate entries for each. There is not a single instance of a wife or family on board. Marriages in column 1 refer only to the current marriage. See the 'Census Information Pages' on the website 'Find My Past' for an excellent explanation of much of this. In Institutions like the County Lunatic Asylum, Thorpe St Andrew, inmates are recorded by their initials only, so the last initial is in place alphabetically here. Places of Birth and Residence All places mentioned were in Norfolk at the time unless otherwise stated. Southtown was added to Yarmouth in 1681, Gorleston became part of Norfolk in 1835 and the border was moved south to add Fritton, Belton, Burgh Castle and Hopton only in 1974. Lowestoft remains firmly in Suffolk. The Southwold to Halesworth Blyth Navigation wherries and wherryman (rare) are included and marked*. Nch = Norwich GY = Great Yarmouth S = Suffolk General Abbreviations ag lab = agricultural labourer bdr = boarder dom ser = domestic servant gen = general hkp = housekeeper lab = labourer lvg = living nk = not known OAP = Old Age Pensioner (from 1909) X in Col 1 = His mark (could not sign) Relations b-i-l = brother-in-law bn = born chn = children dau = daughter d-i-l = daughter-in-law f-i-l = father-in-law gd-dau = grand-daughter gd-son = grand-son ma = mother marr = married m-i-l = mother-in-law pa = father s-i-l = son/sister-in-law sgl = single wid = widow(er) Occupation Column at home = 'carying on trade or industry at home' GCC = General Carrying Company GER = Great Eastern Railway own account = 'neither employing others nor working for a trade employer' S&P = Steward & Paterson IMC = Ice Manufacturing Company worker = 'working for an employer' GSN = General Steam Navigation Company employer = 'employing persons other than domestic servants' Occupation codes useed on census returns: 'Wherryman' is not mentioned in the list of categories. The relevant categories are: 545 = bargeman, waterman, lighterman 551 - 554 = harbour worker 683 - 686 = shipwright, other workers in wood, shipyard labourer, others in ship building. Comments Column 'British Subject / Naturalised British Subject / Foreigner' - This column on the census is rarely filled in, so assume British Subject unless noted in the Comments column. The 'totally deaf, deaf & dumb, totally blind, lunatic, imbecile, feeble-minded' descriptions are all included in the Comments column. Beware The search terms 'waterman', 'boatman', etc are not proof of connection with wherries, but results are included where place of residence, family name, mentions in books etc might indicate it. There were mistakes made transfering information from the household forms (destroyed after being copied) to the enumerators' forms (available on line); there were many mistakes made in indexing for the digitised version, and there are sure to have been mistakes made by me, both reading and typping. Corrections and omissions please to alan@quanting.co.uk Thanks if you do. Please do not take this list as exhaustive or infallible. [ ] Editorial comment or correction. (?) Some doubt here. {Bax} As surname appears in the digitised index. * = See note at end of Table. italic = name of wherry. See separate list '1911 Wherries' for details recorded on 'Schedule for Vessels' Census forms. Alan Helsdon December 2016
