Muscle Names

Muscle Names

Muscle Movement

• Pick three sporting moves/examples and explain what muscles you would need in order to perform that move.

• Example: a sit up in fitness uses the abdominal muscles.

Muscle Movement

• Muscles can only pull when they contract, therefore they work in pairs to create a range of movement around a joint.

• This is called antagonistic muscle action. • The working muscle is called the prime mover

or agonist• The relaxing muscle is called the agonist• What muscles do you think work as a pair?

Antagonistic Movement

Antagonistic Movement

Muscles

• You could not live without muscles. They are involved in every movement of your body. All muscles work by shortening or contracting.

• There are three different types of muscles.

Types of Muscles

Voluntary Muscle (skeletal): • These are attached to bones• They work when you want them to• The brain sends a signal to the muscle to

contract which then pulls on the bone• This creates the movement

• Name an action that these muscle can create

Types of Muscles

Involuntary Muscle:• These are found in the walls of your internal

organs: stomach, gut, bladder and blood vessels.

• Work on their own• These are also called smooth muscles

• Name an action that these muscles create

Types of Muscles

Cardiac muscle:• This is a special involuntary muscle that forms

the walls of your heart.• It works non-stop without tiring• When it contracts, it pumps blood out of your

heart and around your body. • What is this called?
