For this project, the OCLT will partner with the Orange County Department of Health, numerous agencies within the three cities, and the Master Gardeners programat Cornell Cooperative Extension. A matching grant of $6,500 will be provided by theOrange County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board, and funding will also beprovided by Healthy Orange, a project of the OC Department of Health, the City ofPort Jervis and the Middletown Industrial Development Agency (IDA).
The mission of the Orange County Land Trust is topreserve the fields, forests, wetlands, ridgelines andriver corridors in and around Orange County throughvoluntary land conservation for the benefit of people.

I have been so inspired by thepeople I’ve met recently, fromso many different fields herein the county, people that areas concerned with the protection of our naturalareas, as those of us in theconservation community. It is amazing how land pro-tection and conservation cancross so many paths, and affect so many people in ourcommunities- our cities aswell as our rural and suburban areas.
In this issue, you will readabout our urban communitygardens project, a new areafor the Land Trust that willengage residents of our threecities in conservation andland stewardship activities. For this project, we will part-ner with the Orange CountyDepartment of Health, numerous agencies withinthe cities of Port Jervis, Middletown and Newburgh, and Cornell CooperativeExtension. NYSDEC and the Land TrustAlliance, funding for this project will also come fromOrange County Agricultureand Farmland ProtectionBoard, Healthy Orange andthe City of Port Jervis. Thiscollaborative effort will transform vacant urban lots in these three cities into lushcommunity-owned and managed gardens where residents can grow fresh produce and connect with theland. Green, open space anda connection to nature, withaccess to healthy foods andclean water, are goals we allshare for our residents andwill work together to achieve.
I was equally inspired last August when our leaders incounty government decidednot to auction 129-acres offorested land along theShawangunk Ridge, but, because of its high conserva-tion value, decided to ensurethat these lands remain pris-tine forever. We applaud the efforts of our partners inthis preservation effort- the NY-NJ Trails Conference andthe Nature Conservancy aswell as our County Executive,Ed Diana and David Church, our Commissioner of Planning.
Collaboration and partnership.Together, we are much morethan the sum of our parts.Jim

I initially volunteered at OCLT as an
intern as part of my course
requirement for a Rutgers University
Extension Environmental Steward-
ship class. I chose OCLT because I
wanted to learn more about the
process a land trust must follow to
protect open space. The professionals
and volunteers at OCLT impressed
me with their knowledge and
commitment to open space in
Orange County, and I learned a tremendous amount about all the
aspects involved in their efforts. However, deep down inside, I
believe I volunteered to make sure that when the solitary sandpiper
is looking for a place to rest on his way to Argentina, he will find the
same puddles and ponds he stopped at last spring; that the the
bob-o-link will perhaps nest at Hunter Farm so his song is not
silenced by development, that the dead oak trees that house pileated
woodpeckers will not be cut down, and 20 years from now my son
will be able to cross over Mt. Peter and still see hawks flying overhead,
out over the farms and trees of Warwick.
remain undisturbed. It is for this reasonthat our smallestpreserve, the RoyPreserve located inthe Amity wetlandsregion of Warwick, willremain accessible onlyby water through theuse of a canoe, kayak or other
non-motorized watercraft along the Pochuck Creek, so as not to disturb the delicate wetland habitat.

Of the745 acres with conservation easements held by the OCLT, two properties arehistoric working farms (one still awaiting closing) in the towns of Minisinkand Wawayanda. Both farms had their development rights purchased withfunds from Orange County’s Open Space Plan and New York State. Anadditional 30 acres of land along the Pochuck Creek in Warwick was donatedto the Land Trust for a public nature preserve. In 2008, the Land Trust alsoplaced a conservation easement on 155-acres of forested lands along theShawangunk Ridge in Sullivan County. An additional 27 acres in the townof Chester, adjacent to Goosepond Mountain State Park, was also protectedwith a conservation easement in 2008.

In 2008, the Land Trust alsoplaced a conservation easement on 155-acres of forested lands along theShawangunk Ridge in Sullivan County. I initially volunteered at OCLT as an
intern as part of my course
requirement for a Rutgers University
Extension Environmental Steward-
ship class. I chose OCLT because I
wanted to learn more about the
process a land trust must follow to
protect open space. The professionals
and volunteers at OCLT impressed
me with their knowledge and
commitment to open space in
Orange County, and I learned a tremendous amount about all the
aspects involved in their efforts. However, deep down inside, I
believe I volunteered to make sure that when the solitary sandpiper
is looking for a place to rest on his way to Argentina, he will find the
same puddles and ponds he stopped at last spring; that the the
bob-o-link will perhaps nest at Hunter Farm so his song is not
silenced by development, that the dead oak trees that house pileated
woodpeckers will not be cut down, and 20 years from now my son
will be able to cross over Mt. Peter and still see hawks flying overhead,
out over the farms and trees of Warwick.
In addition to
Letter from the Executive Director:Partnering to Preserve our rural heritage, Protect ournatural resources and Plan for our future
Land Protection News

“We are delighted to be awarded three NYS Conservation Partnership grants this year,” said Deanna Prisco, president ofthe Orange County Land Trust. “We are especially excitedabout working to create more green space in our urban areas, and are looking forward to engaging city residents in land conservation, in addition to protecting more working farms in the county and updating survey records for one of our nature preserves,” she said.
