DID YOU KNOW? Aristophanes’ Lysistrata inspired an opera, Lysistrata and the War,

which was written in the early 1960s. The new opera was first performed in Detroit, Michigan by the Wayne State University opera workshop as a protest to the Vietnam War. An alternative title for this

and other adaptations could be: “Make Love, Not War.”

BATTLE  OF  THE  SEXES

Lysistrata

Lysistrata

MICK AND I HAVE BEEN TEXTING ON THIS TOPIC FOR EONS!DON’T MIND US IF WE INTERJECT! PS -‐ IT’S TIME FOR THE FINAL SMACKDOWN!

Men 20, Women 0!

Hah! Bonus point for the men!

Yeah but all that changed when a fierce woman named Lysistrata came onto the scene …

HOLD ON! I totally heard that Spartan women were awesome!

29

Like I said, 20, zip

Wait, I had to memorize all of the constitutional amendments for History class, and I don’t remember the 15th Amendment saying anything about women’s rights.

Come on, we’ve got to get in the game! What about women’s rights? Girl Power? Let’s fast-

forward a bit okay? We’re like in serious need of some points here!

Finally, we’re on the board!

Yeah! Score one for the women!

BATTLE  OF  THE  SEXES 30

Um…still in the lead here – hello?

I don’t know about you but I’ve totally lost track of the score.

Does that count as a penalty point?

Yes, fast-break jumpshot, longbomb three pointer, nothing but net! SCORE! And the crowd goes wild!!

Oh yeah, we should keep going, I guess.

Sounds like we’re all tied up!

BATTLE  OF  THE  SEXES 31

So we totally won, right? Girls rule!

So where does that put us?

Aww that’s so sweet!

Yeah who wins the battle of the sexes?

Yeah that’s like totally poetic.

BATTLE  OF  THE  SEXES 32

So cheerleaders can play basketball…and win too!

It doesn’t matter how you’re expected to behave you just need to be who you are.

And jocks can recite poetry…or write their own!

Well said!

“Give it up! Whatever’s keeping you from

being you, give it up! Let your heart be

free, yeah give it up! Whatever’s keeping you

from being you, you gotta just believe!”

Lysistrata  Jones

BATTLE  OF  THE  SEXES 35

TAKE  A  STAND!

Some  say,  there  are  two  types  of  people  in  the  world:

FOLLOWsay HALF FULL HALF EMPTY

FOLLOW MAKEMOAN DO SOMETHING

Author, Mark Twain had this to say:

Columnist, Abigail Van Buren wrote:

ACTIVISM VS APATHY

“MAYBE IT STARTS AS A STUPID GAME, BUT THEN ONE DAY THAT’S YOUR LIFE. YOU GOTTA GIVE YOUR ALL,

OR WHY EVEN SHOW UP?” LYSSIE J.

“WHY RISK IT ALL DOING WHAT WE DON’T KNOW? JUST LET IT GO AND LAY LOW!”

CHANGE  THE  WOLRD

“Activism is the rent

I pay for living on

this planet.”

It doesn’t take a battle as big as the Peloponnesian War (or a less-than-stellar basketball team) to make you

stand up for a cause that’s important to you.

If you don’t like the way your piece of the world is going: CHANGE IT!

GIVING IT UP: A LOOK BACK AT A LACK OF BOOTY

OK, SO I TOTALLY THOUGHT I WAS THE FIRST GENIUS TO PUT A LOCK AND KEY ON HER “V”...BUT APPARENTLY LADIES HAVE BEEN DOING THIS ALL OVER THE WORLD TO GET WHAT THEY WANT. THEY WEREN’T

ALWAYS SUCCESSFUL, BUT THEY DEFINITELY MADE A POINT. XOXO, LYSSIE J.”

GIVING IT UP: OTHERS WHO GAVE IT UP TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

THERE I WAS IN THE LIBRARY – I GOT LOST, BUT DON’T WORRY, ROBIN HELPED ME DO SOME MORE DIGGING INTO HOW SOME OTHER AMAZING PEOPLE WHO’VE USED STRIKES TO GET SOME BIG RESULTS.

NO, IT WASN’T ALWAYS BY HOLDING BACK THE NOOKIE, BUT THEY SURE KNEW A GOOD STRATEGY WHEN THEY SAW ONE – ESPECIALLY WHEN IT DIDN’T INVOLVE VIOLENCE. WHETHER FOR PEACE, RIGHTS, EQUALITY, OR

JUST A LITTLE EXTRA BOOZE, THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE CANNOT BE DENIED!

LOVE, LYSSIE J.

CHEERLEADING  FOR  DUMMIES

And maybe YOU!

A TIMELINE OF CHEERLEADING

DID YOU KNOW... FAMOUS CHEERLEADERS INCLUDE SOME BIG MOVERS AND SHAKERS (....AND THAT IS NOT A SPORTS-‐BRA JOKE!)

40

DID YOU KNOW?The world of Cheerleading is huge and thriving. Check out these crazy facts:

The Cheerleading capital of the U.S. is Texas. Texas is also where a mother was accused of hiring a hit man to kill her daughter’s rival in competition.

Circulation for American Cheerleader magazine is estimated at 200,000.

Some of the most common Cheerleading injuries are broken arms and busted lips.

97% of all cheerleaders are female, however, almost 50% of collegiate Cheerleaders are male.

WHO’S WHO IN THE HALL OF HOOPS

It all depends on who the ball is made for! The NBA basketball is made of composite leather, a synthetic material designed to withstand

slam dunks and allow all-stars like Kobe Bryant to keep a good grip as they go for the ally-oop! WNBA balls are also made of composites but are slightly smaller because female players tend to have smaller hands. High school and college stars use real leather balls sometimes. Rubber balls are for novice players and are great for street games because of their durability. Beneath the surface, deep within each basketball lies

a gridwork of nylon, rubber, and a material called butyl. These layers help the ball stand up to hours of double dribbles.
