The Loveable Lory concerning lories as pets. Lories arethe easiest of psittacines to feed, sincethere are many commercial diets onthe market that may be fed dry ormixed with water. They will eatalmost any fruit in season and they dohave hearty appetites. Nutritionaldeficiencies and the associated medi­cal problems that are so common inmost parrots are almost non-existentin lories because of the quality of thecommercial diets available and thefact that they will eat almost any fruitoffered.

The major misconception aboutlories is that they are messy birds andtheir liquidy droppings make themunsuitable as house pets. Balderdash!While it is true that due to their diet,they pass more water (urine) in theirdroppings, there is less odor andstaining than with other psittacinedroppings. If absorbent material suchas corn cob bedding, under a gratingso it is not ingested, is used in thebottom of the cage, and a "splash­zone" is taken into account aroundthe cage, clean-up time for the cage isabout the same as for any otherparrot.

Lories definitely recognize individ­uals and, being outgoing, will usuallygo to anyone even though they mayhave favorite people. All baby birdsare sweet and loving, but by the thirdor fourth year, when breeding seasoncomes around and the playful nipsturn into eye-watering bites, manyparrot owners start thinking abouteither breeding or selling theirbeloved pet, but the sweet and love-

Objectsare picked up in their toes for closerinspection and tasting. They are notshy birds at all. More often they arefearless. Objects within their reachare inspected and almost immediatelyconsidered a play toy. Often they willpick up an object, roll over onto theirback, and hold it in their feet, turningand scrutinizing and, if possible, dis­assembling it.

Lories are really hardy birds, andmany of the diseases that Amazons,cockatoos, African Greys, andmacaws are susceptible to, are notcommonly seen in lories.

As a pet, nothing beats a hand­raised lory. Lories are easy to handfeed with a spoon, and they'll oftenbe eating on their own before they'refeathered out. There is a huge differ­ence in temperament between hand­fed babies and parent-raised orimported young adult birds. If youwant a loving pet, be sure to get ahand-raised baby. Wild lodes willtame down, and usually will talk, butthey'll never be the pet a hand-raisedbaby will be, and they will quicklyrevert to their wild behaviors again ifthey are not given constant attention.

Lories are very animated birds,with exaggerated movements. Theydo not walk or run, they hop, andthey will often freeze momentarily inan array of adorable poses, headcocked, watching you watch them.We enjoy observing our lories' antics;their clown-like behavior alwaysmakes us smile.

Because lories are such active birds,we recommend you house a pet in thelargest cage that your living space letsyou accommodate. Smaller cages maysuffice, if your lory is allowed a lot ofsupervised outside play-time. Ourexperience has been that lories alllove swings. They will get the swinggoing by leaning forward and back­ward, much as a child will start aswing going by using his legs topump. They do love toys and will playwith objects as long as their interest isheld. Ladders, knotted rope andswings will serve as the acrobat'sequipment. You will be at least asamused watching your lory's antics ashe will be playing on his trapeze.

Lories are the most colorful of allthe psittacines and there is a widediversity of sizes from five inches totwelve inches in height. You willnever meet a lory you won't love­they all make excellent pets. Themore common lories seen in the pettrade are the Green-naped Rainbow,Chattering, Red, Black, Dusky andBlue-streaked. These are just a few ofthe species of lories yet to be offeredby the pet industry. Any of these lor­ies will be a good talker, companion,and certainly a beautiful addition toyour family.
