The Direct Method It became widely known and practiced at

the end of the 20th century. Its basic premise is that second

language learning should be more like first language learning.

It was more accepted in the private sphere than in the public one.

It was criticized due to its weak theoretical foundations.

Conclusion

By the beginning of the century, this method declined both in Europe and the USA, returning to the Grammar Translation Method or a Reading Approach.

By the middle of the century, the Direct Method revived and redirected into the Audiolingual Method.
