Objectives:

Describe the 21st century skills;

Identify ways to develop the 21st century skills;

Apply the 21st century skills to improve teaching and learning.

Read the following case. Discuss and decide as agroup if the teaching-learning process shows examples of21st century learning.

TOPIC: PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED SPECIES

LEVEL: 6

Teacher shows students a table containing a list ofanimals classified as endangered and information abouttheir status. Teacher asks students to select from thetable three animals that interest them.

Teacher asks students to copy from the tableinformation about the animals’ habitats, thecountries where they are found and 2-3 factorsthat threaten their survival. Students copyinformation in their notebooks.

Teacher next tells students to select one outof the three they viewed. Teacher instructsstudents to sketch a picture of their chosenanimal. Teacher shows students references fortheir drawings.

Teacher tells students to do their sketch on apiece of bond paper. Below the picture, studentsare asked to write the information they copied.Teacher tells students to frame their picture.

When done, teacher has students post theirsketches on a wall in the classroom. In effect, thewall becomes a gallery of animals classified asendangered. Teacher invites students to sharetheir sketches and talk about their animals.

In this setting, educators can leverage technologyto create an engaging and personalizedenvironment to meet the emerging educationalneeds of this generation. No longer doeslearning have to be one-size-fits-all or confinedto the classroom. The opportunities afforded bytechnology should be used to re-imagine 21st-century education, focusing on preparingstudents to be learners for life.
