Pre-Excursion Activities

Activity 1: Different bears

Teachersintroducethethemebyreading“DougaltheGarbageDumpBear”oranotherappropriatepicturebook,listeningtoasong,poemordisplayingapictureofteddiesorbears.Discussiontakesplaceaboutbears.Students,withteacher’shelp,listallthedifferentsortsofbearstheycanthinkof,theycanberealandstorycharacters,thiswillbedisplayedintheclassroomthroughoutthethemeandaddedto.Examples;polar,brown,grizzly,panda,teddy,WinniethePooh,Paddington,Humphrey,Yogi,Goldilocksandthe3Bears,BerensteinBears.Discussthedifferencesbetweenrealbearsandteddybears/storymake–believebears,recordinformationasaVennDiagram.

Teacherhasacollectionofbearpicturebooksfromthelibrary.

Activity 2: My teddy at school

Studentswillnaturallyask,cantheybringtheirbearsintoschool.Makeadecisiontogetheraboutwhichbearsshouldcome.Willyouincludecuddlytoysofanykind,modelbears,potteryonesetc.Oncethestudentshavebroughttheirteddiestoschool,theycouldbedisplayedtogetherinthe“BearCorner”.

Otherpossibleactivities:

1. Differentphotoscouldbetakenofstudentswithandwithouttheirteddy,discussionwouldtakeplaceaboutsomeofthepossibilitiesandstoriescouldbewritten:

• Thestudentwiththeirteddyinaparticularposeorareaoftheclassroom/school

• Teddyplayingontheplayequipment

• Teddywithhisschoolbag

• Teddyintheschoollibraryreadingabook

Thephotoscouldbedisplayedinthe‘PortraitGallery”,eachphotolabelledwiththenameofstudentandbearandadescriptionaboutwhatishappening.

2. Teachercouldhave‘TinyTeddy’sinajar.Havethestudentsestimatehowmanythereare,countthemtoseewhichstudentisclosest.

3. Investigatetheclassbearsmathematically;howmany,sortintofierceandfriendlyones,smoothandfurry,groupinsets;small,middlesizeandlarge,furry,fuzzy,withandwithoutclotheson,differentcolours,weighthem,sort

intolightestandheaviest.Measurethebears.Findabigger/smallerbearthanyourown.Makeupaclassgraph,VennDiagramorwriteoutmathematicalstoriestorecordyourfindings.Studentscouldmakelifesizepicturesoftheirbearsbydrawingaroundthemandcolouringthemin,orgluingonmaterialovertheoutline.

4. Createaclassphotoofthebearsandusethistoexploresuchconceptsasnextto,infrontof,behind,above,belowetc.Studentsmovetheteddiesaccordingtotheinstruction.Eg.Putyourteddybehindyourfriend’steddy.

5. Teachercouldusea‘bear’stampcut-outtopressoutvariouscoloursofbears,give12differentcolouredbearstostudentstograph.Discussasagrouporinpairs:Whatcolouredbearsdoyouhavemostof?Whatcolouredbearsdoyouhavetheleastof?Whohasthemostyellowbearsetc?Howmanyredandgreenbearsdoyouhave?Whatisgreaterthenumberofbluebearsorthenumberofredbears?

Discuss:Whatisapicnic?Discussthestudent’sownexperiencesonpicnics–wheretheywent,whatfoodtheytooketc.Talkaboutpicnicbaskets,eskys,flasks,blankets,rugs,chairs.Howdidyougettoyourpicnic?Talkabouttheplaceswhereyougoforpicnics–beach,bush,hills,park,gardensetc.Talkaboutthefoodyouate,BBQ,sandwiches,cakesetc.Whatdidyoudo?-Playgames,gowalking,swimming.

OrganiseaclassTeddybearspicnic,discuss:Whotoinvite,Wheretogo,When,Whatkindofentertainment?Teacher/StudentsdesignandmakeinvitationsDesignandcreateaplacematforteddytoeatoffMakesomesandwiches,cakesforthepicnic.Decorateteddybearbiscuitswithicing,sprinkles,smartiesetcListthefoodthatteddiesmightliketoeat,thingsbeginningwith‘b’eg.Bananas,bun,beans,BBQsausages,biscuits.Dressyourteddyupforthepicniceg.Addabelt,tie,waistcoat,hatRead“DougaltheGarbageDumpBear”forideasaboutdressingteddy,picnics,thingstodo,photosetc.Takephotosoftheclasspicnicandmakeateachermodelledstorybook.Learnandsingthesong“TeddyBear’sPicnic”andotherteddy/bearsongs.

Teacherreadsortellsthestoryof“GoldilocksandtheThreeBears”.Indiscussionthefocuscouldbeonthenumberandsizeofbearsbowls,chairsandbeds.• Askthestudentstogetintogroupsof3.Doeseachgrouphaveasmall,middlesizeandbigchild?Ifnotwhatdo

theyhave?

• Askthewholeclasstoputthemselvesinorderofsize.Takeadigitalpicturefordisplayandrecordobservationsinstoryformunderthepicture.

• Insmallgroupsaskstudentstodrawpicturesofeventsfromthestoryandputtheminorder.Thestudentsmustexplaintheirchoiceofeventandorder.

Activity 5: Teddy bear art and craft

Someactivitiesforartandcraftinclude:

1. Create3Dteddybearsfromcardboardboxesandcylinders.Paintthebearsonceconstructioniscomplete.

2. Maketeddybearplacematsbycolouringinpicturesfromtheinternet.

3. StudentactivityNo7:Colouringpagesforteddybearplacemats.

4. WriteinvitationstoGrade5/6buddies,parentsorteacherstoattenda“TeddyBear’sPicnic.”

5. Makeadisplayforthewallofteddybearsdressedupasadoctor,Elvis,teacher,fireman,picnicbears,Paddington,PoohBearandothers.

Activity 6: Teddy prepares to visit The Old Mildura Station Homestead

FollowingaresomepossiblestudentactivitiesthatcouldbecompletedbeforeanexcursiontotheOldMilduraStationHomestead:

1. Asaclass,brainstormwhatyouthinkyouwillseeanddoattheOldMilduraStationHomestead.Makeupacharttorecordallthesuggestions.Firstdecideasagrouphowbesttorecordthisinatableanddisplaythisintheroom.Therearesomeimageswhichmayassistwiththisdiscussionathttp://www.milduraarts.net.au/Page/Page.asp?Page_Id=45.

2. TakesomepicturesofateddyatvariousbuildingsandplacesintheOldMilduraStationHomesteadandshowthemtoyourclass.Inpairsgetthestudentstalkingaboutwhatteddyisdoingandmakeupastoryabouthim(thiscouldberecordedverballyontoarecorder,teacherorstudentwritten).MakeupaPowerPointslideshowwiththestudentsstories.

3. Read“DiaryofaWombat”.Discuss;wombatactivities,timeofday,daysofweeketc.Discusspossibleteddyactivities.Studentsthenwriteanddrawtheirown;“DiaryofmyTeddy”startingwithMonday,includingmorning,afternoon,eveningandnightactivitiesandconcludingontheSunday.Avarietyofdifferentartmediumscouldbeexplored;crayons,pastels,collage(materialandnaturalbitsandpieces),printing,famousBearscutoutsandmagazinepictures.MakeasimpleA4bookofsevenpages,witheachpagedividedintofourths(formorning,afternoon,eveningandnight).

Excursion

Activity 7: Teddy at the Old Mildura Station Homestead

StudentsneedtodecidebeforethevisitwhattheywanttheirteddytodowhilstattheOldMilduraStationHomestead.Teachersneedtodecideifitisfeasibleforeachstudenttobringtheirteddyorratherusetheclassorteacher’steddy.Studentscouldcompletethefollowingsuggestionsinsmallteacher/parentledgroups,takingphotosofstudentsandteddiesinvariousplaces.

Somepossibleactivitiesare:• Teddyhastolookforaplacetolive,inahutorcottage.Teddychecksouteachdwellingforcomfort,size,furniture,

easytogettoetc.

• Teddywantstogetajob.GoforawalkupamongsttheHomesteadbuildingsandcheckoutthevariousoccupations(shearer,blacksmith,farmer,winemaker,stablehand,boatbuilderandengineer).Whichonewillhechooseandwhy,recordeventsphotographically.

• Teddywantstoexplorethetown.Whatarethedifferentwaysinwhichhecantravel?(eg.byboat,foot,horse)

• Teddywantstobeatouristandhaveagoodsight-seeingdayattheOldMilduraStationHomesteadandseeanddoasmuchashecan.Recordphotographicallyalltheplacesthatteddyvisits.(perhapslimitthenumberofphotosforeachstudentto5).

• Duringthelunchbreak,afilmrecordingcouldbemadeofthestudentswiththeirteddiesattherosegardenhavinglunch.

• Visitthe“MalleeRollerortheboringmachine–haveteddyguessanimaginativewayinwhichitcouldbeusedtoday.

• Holda“TeddyBear’sPicnic”intheHomesteadrosegarden.

Havethestudentsdigitalphotosprintedoff,tousefordiscussion.Getstudentsintotheir‘excursion’groupingstodiscuss.(ifpossiblehavetheparenthelpersavailabletoassist)

StudentsmakeupastoryabouttheirteddyattheOldMilduraStationHomestead.Usingthephotos,placethephotosinsequenceorder.Storiescouldbeteacher/parentorstudentwrittenorrecorded.TeachercoulddevelopaPowerPointslideshowusingonephotofromeachstudent,toshowtherestoftheschoolcommunity.
