What is Task-Based listening? Task: An activity which requires learners to use

language, with emphasis on meaning, to attain an objective (Bygate et al, 2001; in Van den Branden, 2006: p.4).

A task is an activity in which a person engages in order to attain an objective, and which necessitates the use of language (Van den Branden, 2006: p. 4).

So task-based listening is…Approach to listeningUnderstand orally delivered informationTo do something with it (realistic, social,

academic, etc.)

Students are asked to listen to what are described as “authentic” situations and to “do something” with the information. This may be completing a diagram or chart, filling in a table, or drawing a picture (Flowerdew and Miller, 2005: p. 16)

Approaches to teaching listeningComprehension Approach: CA- Listening = Reading- Repeated listening vs. quality of listening tasks- Question based vs. understanding based- Isolation vs. socio-constructivism - Classroom reality vs. Outside reality

Comprehension questions enable us to judge but they do not enable us to remedy (Field, 2008: p.31).
