Aims

• To explain what Talis Decisions is and how it works to help analyse information

• To give you the ability to use the major features of Talis Decisions

• Won’t be going into a lot of detail about Universes

Who are you

Who are you?Which library do you work for?Experience of Business Objects? What are your hopes for the course?

What is Talis Decisions?

• A decision support and performance management tool

• Powered by Business Objects Enterprise XI R2 SP1

InfoView

• Portal• Report viewing and scheduling tool• Organising objects - Categories / Folders• Discussions• Used to access Web Intelligence• Used to distribute documents• Used to schedule documents

• Browsers – IE and Firefox

shared innovation

Web Intelligence• Accessed through InfoView• Used to create documents • Multiple queries/Multiple reports• Formatting is sophisticated

• Very like Desktop Intelligence now• Web based reporting tool – Enterprise• Uses Java

Class

Objects

• Objects are given familiar names• Objects are mapped to relevant data elements

shared innovation

What are Universes made of?

• There are three types of object in a Universe:

Dimensions Details Measures

Supplier nameSupplier code

Author Total items

Using the MIS server

• Currency of data versus performance

Your client Workstation

You run the Query in a Browser

A report is displayed

DecisionsServer

The query isconverted to

SQL

The report is generated

Alto Database

The SQL is executed to extract the

data

shared innovation

Important concepts

• Objects– InfoView – all sorts of files– Universes – dimensions, details and measures

• Documents– Web Intelligence or Desktop Intelligence documents

• Reports– Formatted output from a query/queries

• Aggregation

shared innovation

Aggravation?

shared innovation

No – Aggregation!

Item types and loan types included in table, totals broken down to reflect this.

Loan types have been removed –totals aggregated as a result

Item types removed and Loan types re-instated

Note: Total of all issues and renews has remained the same throughout

shared innovation

Practical work through of functionality• InfoView

– layout, folders and categories, viewing, refreshing and saving documents

• Edit Query– layout, creating a query, modifying a query, filters

• Edit Report – layout, creating tables, adding blocks of data, charts,

freestanding cells and images• Edit Report

– Breaks, sections, calculations, sorts, filters, ranking, alerters, formatting

• Edit Report – Formulas and variables, synchronising queries, drilling

• InfoView- user inboxes, email, FTP, File location, scheduling

shared innovation

Getting Started with InfoView

• Logon• System names• User names• Passwords• Authentication• Rights

shared innovation

Filters – how do they help?

shared innovation

Filters

When can they be applied?

• Query filter• Report filter• At both stages

shared innovation

Query filters

• Benefits – Retrieves just the data needed for the specific query– Minimises data returned so optimises performance of the

document

• However – query filters add performance overhead on the server

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------• Objects don’t have to appear in the results object pane in

order to be used in a filter

• Not all objects can be used as filters

shared innovation

Restricting Data

• Object – Operator – Operand

Types of query filter:• Single-value and multi-value filters• Lists of values• Prompted filters• Complex filters

shared innovation

Synchronising Queries

shared innovation

Some Synchronising Rules

1. You can only link on dimension objects.2. The dimension objects do not have to have the same name.3. The dimension objects must have a common data format.4. Although actual values do not have to be the same, all data

held in the microcube is case sensitive and therefore any common values must be in the same case.

5. The format of the values must be the same.6. Any number of queries can be linked by common dimension

objects.7. Any number of dimension objects can be merged between

two queries.

shared innovation

Drilling

• Drilling• Hierarchies• Snapshots

shared innovation

Talis Decisions functionality (some of it!)• InfoView

– layout, folders and categories, viewing, refreshing and saving documents

• Edit Query– layout, creating a query, modifying a query, filters

• Edit Report – layout, creating tables, adding blocks of data, charts,

freestanding cells and images• Edit Report

– Breaks, sections, calculations, sorts, filters, ranking, alerters, formatting

• Edit Report – Formulas and variables, synchronising queries, drilling

• InfoView- user inboxes, email, FTP, File location, scheduling
