Take A Seat

Age-friendly Manchester

• In 2010, Manchester was the first UK city to be accepted into the World Health Organisation's Global Network of Age-friendly Cities in recognition of the work carried out by the Valuing Older People partnership.

• Manchester signed the declaration alongside cities such as New York , Lyons & Tai Pei

What did we want to know?

Research Questions

•How can we develop an age-friendly neighbourhood?•How age-friendly is Old Moat now? •What would make Old Moat more Age-friendly?•How can we know we are succeeding? •How can we use these findings and methodologies to answer these questions in other neighbourhoods in Manchester (and beyond)?

People of all ages were asked for their views and ideas about Withington's age friendliness

Take a Seat !

• The WHO guidelines state that• “The Availability of seating areas is generally

viewed as a necessary urban feature for older people; its difficult for many older people to walk around their neighbourhood without somewhere to rest”

• There are two options indoor seating and outdoor seating.

• The need to attract footfall and investment to the district centre is high to support growth and economic stability

•To provide a safe place to sit and rest •Offer a free glass of water or even a brew•Toilet if possible •Help and support•Friendly face•A warm Welcome

What we found•Businesses were already much more age friendly than thought!

Xx Businesses have now signed up to the Age Friendly Agenda
