FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR...
Dear Members and Friends,
I am honored to be Executive Director of the Michigan Women’s Historical Center &
Hall of Fame. After serving as Assistant Director/Curator since 2010, I was selected
to lead the organization following Sandy Soifer’s retirement.
Last year was an amazing year for our organization, as we celebrated milestone
anniversaries for both the Michigan Women’s Studies Association and the Michigan
Women’s Hall of Fame. This year we are planning new events and partnerships to
engage audiences in Michigan women’s history. We are examining our internal
structure and planning to ensure that we fulfill our mission to “inspire and engage adults and children by
celebrating Michigan women’s history, promoting educational opportunities, and honoring the
accomplishments of Michigan women.”
I am proud to announce that we received some exciting grants this year. We are participating in the
Collection Assessment Program from Heritage Preservation to conduct an assessment of our
collections and of our historic building. This grant will give us preservation priorities and enables us to apply
for grants to address identified priorities. We received a Major Grant from the Michigan Humanities
Council to create an exhibit on Michigan women veterans in partnership with American Legion Post 535
Nuwarine (the last all-female post in Michigan), which will open in March 2015. The Ingham County
Hotel/Motel Grant for Arts and Tourism administered by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing
(ACGL) gave us a grant for promoting the museum outside of Ingham County. We also received a special
Incentive Grant from the ACGL to create a celebration weekend of events here at the museum
following the Annual Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame Awards Dinner and Induction Ceremony in October.
It is our dedicated supporters, members, and volunteers make all of this possible and continue to be one of
our strengths. I am truly grateful for the time and resources you contribute towards our mission.
On behalf of our staff and boards, I extend our deepest gratitude to our 2013 donors recognized in this
newsletter. You are helping us create a future for Michigan women’s history.
If you would like to share your ideas, time or skills—please contact me at 517-484-1880 ext. 200 or
efijol@michiganwomen.org.
I hope to see you at one of our upcoming new events, such as the exclusive screening of American
Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs presented in partnership with the East Lansing Film
Festival (page 5) and the lecture “Women Peacemakers in Michigan and Around the World” by
Rosalie Riegle with the Michigan Oral History Association (page 5).
Sincerely,
Emily Fijol
Executive Director, Michigan Women’s Historical Center & Hall of Fame
www.michiganwomenshalloffame.org 3
Dear Members and Friends,
This has been an exciting year with many
changes at the Michigan Women’s Historical
Center & Hall of Fame.
In December, we welcomed Emily Fijol as the
Executive Director of the Center. She was
the Assistant Director for about five years
and started this new position as an
experienced museum curator and
administrator. Immediately after beginning her new position in
December, she faced many challenges with our historic building due
to the harsh winter, but business carried on with lots of activities, in
spite of the weather.
In April, we elected three new board members at the Annual
Meeting of the Michigan Women’s Studies Association (MWSA).
We welcome Denise Quarles, Director at Zonta International,
Wendy Bice, Executive Director of the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan, and Andrea Rodriguez, Hispanic Women in the Network,
to the MWSA Board of Directors. They have already contributed a
great deal to the board and we are looking forward to a long
relationship with them.
The new exhibit Courage in Action: Stories of Michigan Women in the
Civil Rights Movement (pg 7) has attracted some esteemed visitors. It
was a true pleasure for me to welcome Dr. Alveda King, Martin
Luther King, Jr.’s niece, and her three sons to the Center to view
the exhibit. In addition, one of Viola Liuzzo’s daughters came to view
her mother in the exhibit. They all enjoyed the entire Center and it
was our honor to host their visits.
Be sure to save October 30th for the Michigan Women’s Hall of
Fame Awards Dinner & Induction Ceremony (pgs 1, 4, 5). We will
be inducting a very interesting and accomplished group of
contemporary and historic inductees this year that I know you will
enjoy learning more about at the dinner.
Sincerely,
Shirley Zeller

Women and the Civil War
Michigan women were
important participants in
during the Civil War, keeping
life on the home front going,
supporting soldiers, nursing
the ill and injured, and some

Courage in Action: Stories of Michigan Women
in the Civil Rights Movement
The Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act celebrate their 50th anniversaries in
2014 and 2015 respectively. Many Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame inductees
played pivotal roles in the events of the Civil Rights Movement that resulted in the
passage of these important pieces of legislation. Courage in Action honors these
milestones by exploring the bold and brave acts of Grace Lee Boggs, Nellie Cuellar,
Waunetta Dominic, Rosa Slade Gragg, Viola Liuzzo, and Rosa Parks. The exhibit
places the stories of these women against the timeline of the Civil Rights
Movement and challenges visitors by asking what they would do in a similar situation. Visitors will gain a
richer understanding of the Civil Rights Movement through the accounts of these courageous women. The
exhibit will be on display through February 2015. We would like to thank our major sponsors: Doctors
Approach Dermatology & Med Spa, Dr. C.P. Lee, Meijer, and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
