Synthetic Cubism

• Emphasis on collage– Usually large pieces of neutral, colored, or printed

paper collaged to look like a specific object– These were called “papiers collés” (collages)– Even included fragments and signs from actual

objects (newspaper, playing cards, advertisements)

– Synthetic Cubism inspired Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden (Harlem Renaissance)

Assignment

• Choose an animal to portray, and collect a variety of images, colors, words, stories, etc. that involve that animal.

• Use these gathered materials to collage the animal (Synthetic Cubism).– Magazines– Colorful papers– Newspaper clippings– Drawings

• Focus on light and shadow to give the animal a sense of form/depth.
